Redbox instant by verizon is set to launch on december 17 where the price per month to stream movies online is $6 and if you want to stream movies online while also having the ability to rent movies at a redbox kiosk it will be $8 a month where you will receive 4 credits that must be used before the month is over because it will not carry over to the next month so that one months credits can be used the folllowing month. All of redbox's video library will be made available to be watched online for fios customers who sign up for the plan. Users can reserve movies online and check to ensure that the movies they want at a kiosk will be there when they pick it up. Redbox instant by verizon will also allow android users the ability to download a movie starting at $.99 where it can be watched on a plane. The deal between redbox and verizon will allow people the opportunity to watch movies on android /ios devices, samsung tvs, blue ray players and on the xbox 360 console.

The more importrant factor to me is HD.  The Redbox kiosks have not even a handful of Blu-Ray titles (which is why I rarely bother with Redbox).  So Redbox rentals aren't a big draw.  And we don't know if any streamiung will be at a full 1080p, Dolby 5.1 format.  If they aren't, no sale for me.

I let my daughter get Redbox movies, it is better than the SD VOD title cost. But if Redbox will not stream HD, I am with you. It would be just like another SD premium channel I would never watch.

Verizon executives told fierce cable that redbox instant by verizon was to launch on december 17 but verizon's ceo announced that due to some complications redbox instant is not expected to launch until the second quarter of 2013 which is right after verizon starts to implement their six strikes policy that will end up throttling their customer's internet speed if a customer is believed to have downloaded something illegally online. Redbox instant was scheduled to be released before 2012 was over but due to rising streaming content costs over licensing the delay now exists. Much like a lot of other things that verizon has promised they have failed to deliver where their ceo said that the cost of movie content now is going the way of sports programming which is really high so that is why verizon has yet to add the pac 12 network or bein sports because they do not want to raise the prices of their packages if everyone who has them for their tv is going to be paying for a price increase for channels that they may not watch. Time warner just added bein sports in hd for both the english and spanish feeds while comcast has announced that they are dropping gol tv now that they have bein sports which is only in sd. Verizon has taken a look at redbox's library and has decided that there is not enough there that verizon feels would entice their fios customers to sign up for the deal so verizon and redbox are currently working to ensure that they have the kind of new release content that any movie fan would want to be there once redbox instant is launched. Redbox is on the hook for at least 2 billion dollars a year to studios to carry those movies but that number is now going to increase as verizon wants to make sure that there are as many new releases available for their customers just like it would be at a local video store. What's interesting about this verizon deal is that comcast is offering their streampix free for 1 year if you sign up with them for a triple play where after that it is $5 a year where comcast is also offering all of their dvr boxes for free now if you sign up with them for a triple play. Verizon customers it appears will have no free trial and of course they have to pay for their dvrs every month. It all depends on who you negotiate your contract with when signing up for tv service as there are people who are getting their first year free of all movie channels plus a free spanish package with comcast if they enter into a 2 year contract with them. Redbox instant will launch but if it gets delayed again to the end of 2013 when it finally is launched verizon customers will have already lost interest in it.

Seeing more about an impending rollout of Redbox Instant.  See no notice that it will be available via FIOS?  See mention of other devices:  Android, Samsung Blu-Ray players, Google TV, iOS, LG Smart TV and any TVs with SmartHub BUT NO FIOS?

You can even sign up to beta test it --

Ditto for me... when ROKU support is there, I will be too!!

I use ROKU for NETFLIX today (among other streaming sources)... so redbox instant will have to support if they want to woo me away!!

The big problem I see ahead is that, although 4 discs a month from a Redbox kiosk sounds good, they don't have anywhere near the current selection that, say, Netflix offers.  And the selections are even fewer for Blu-Ray.  So, while the price is right, I'd still have to pay Netflix for current HD releases...since Redbox kiosks barely carry them.  Also, in regards to streaming, there is NO info on the movie descriptions as to whether it is HD or not (and if it is, what type), Dolby 5.1 or not,  orignal widescreen ratio or cropped.  Didn't any of this come up in beta testing?
