Black flashing every 10 min Handshake issues

I have had FiOS less than a week. I used to have cable. The picture is much better the internet seems faster, the other stuff looks cool. HOWEVER I have handshake issues and no one knows what I am talking about. Cable was much better when it comes to customer service and I may change back just for that. I get 2 flashes every 10 min or so. I know what it is I'm looking for a fix. I have a Pioneer AV A Sony TV and this Verizon box. I read that a HDMI switch from the AV to the TV may fix it. The poster said he does not know why it worked but it did. The Tec at Pioneer said it was the signal from the box was week and a booster would do it.

Has anyone found a fix?

I had the handshake issue with my older Dell tv when I first got fios whenever I switched from HD to SD channels. Once the new update kicked in things were fixed 100%.

There is something that you can try that may fix the problem for you that made things better for me.

In fios go to menu, settings, then to video settings, then over to SD Overwrite. If it is on, turn it off.

See if that fixes it.

Many people who daisy-chain HDMI components will report problems, specifically when putting an AVR between the STB and the TV. Sometimes those issues are alleviated by going direct from the DVR to the TV. You could also check avsforum.com to see solutions implimented by others who have the same equiment you do (check the Pioneer xx owner's thread for your AVR). Another thing to try is to ensure that all components have the latest firmware updates. And lastly, if handshake problems persist, you could revert to component cables plus audio to the TV.

Try going directly via HDMI from the STB to the TV for a test.  If the problem goes away, on some AV receivers, HDMI settings allow customization that may be causing you HDMI handshake issue, which this appears to be.   An alternative would be HDMI directly to the TV for video, and optical to the AV receiver for audio.  This might solve the problem if you can isolate it to the receiver in the loop doing the direct test I suggested.

Well I got the system because I was under the impression that HTMI was the BEST was to go. I can run directly to the TV and change inputs on the TV not the AV just more cables. The issue is the Verizon box and they seem unwilling to help. I would hate to return to cable. I can't be the only one with this issue. I'm going to try component and optical from the box to the AV.

SD stands for standard definition.

HDMI is the best picture quality. Component cables to me are sub par.

The others are correct when saying an HDMI cable should go directly to the tv if you can do it. Handshake issues arent that rare though. Some people with certain brand tv's have more issues then others with a different brand.

I know before fios updated to 1.9 there were many, many hand shake issues. That to me said it was a software issue that they seemed to have fixed.

I would still try changing the settings for SD to off like I said, but would defiently put the hdmi directly to the tv.

Run the hdmi to the tv and run the coax or optical sound cable to the surround sound receiver.

Thanks I may have to do that. Now if I switch to SD wont I get a SD picture?

My Wife will hate me if I change the inputs again. I rocked her world when I got the AV with all HTMI. I love how Pioneer Sony and Verizon all point fingers at each other. When I got the recever Best Buy tryed to sell me a $150.00 HTMI cable. The guy said it keeps issues from happening.

That guy at best buy should be smacked. Typical sales guy though. A $150 cable vs. a $2 cable isnt going to make a difference.

Changing the SD setting wont make things SD. All it does is change settings for any SD channels that arent HD. When the setting is on it will make your screen fill in full screen mode which can cause handshake issue. The setting mainly use to cause issues with handshakes when switching from a HD channel to a SD one. When the setting it is off SD channels will have the black bars on each side so you will have to manually hit the # key twice to make it full screen.

I just turned mine back on to see what would happen and I do get a 5 second handshake issue when switching from HD to SD channels. When its off I dont get any.

Well with no help from Verizon, Pioneer or Sony who point fingers at each other I think I fixed it.

I went with component cables from the STB to the AV then had to run a optical cable for sound. So far so good. I first went back to Best Buy and bought a $50.00 HTMI just to rule it out. It goes back today.

Verizon needs to wake up to the fact many people have up to date home theater. Everything uses HTMI now. Telling me if I do not hook it directly to the TV they will not support it is just stupid. Had I not spent all this time trying other ways I would have gone to a different company. I'm paying them $2160.00 a year you would think that would get some help assuring I get what I paid for.

Thnkks for your help
