I'm sure this has been asked before -
Can I purchase my own Motorola CableCard (on eBay, for example), and activate it with Verizon for use in my TiVo?
Thanks!

Not without paying a monthly rental fee anyway.

If I buy my own CableCard, how can Verizon charge a rental fee? I'm not renting it from them...?

If they even support a user purchased CC, they would still charge the fee.
It is not only the cost of the item, but the support they provide if you have an issue.

Support? This is Verizon we are talking about.
They charge you for your own device because they can, not for support. Which doesn't exist.

Cable cards have to be loaded with the necessary codes to unencrypt Verizon's encryption. This is what they are charging for, not the physical card. They really were never meant to be "purchased" by end users.

You're spot on with your answer. Best bet is to get a cable card from Verizon unless it costs more monthly.
