Can't activate DVR box

I just received an additional box, the activation code does not work it says wrong code or zip or state. Also I don't have a wall receptacle for new box. We originally had Comcast and switched to FIOS last year, we discontinued using the extra box downstairs when my son moved out. My dilema is: I have  the cable coming in from outside which ends up at a three way splitter.

The first cable on the splitter is the FIOS router, the middle cable goes back outside from the spltter, and the third cable cable is an unused internet connection, how do I activate the box and which cable do I use to hook up the box?

First of all, the new box will not activate until you connect it to a coax outlet. It has to communicat with the remote Fios system. You could temporarily connect it in place of the existing box just to get it activated. Note that if it remains disconnected for a period of time (not sure...maybe 30 days?), it will deactivate and you will have to call Verizon to get it activated again.

You should have 4 connection places on your splitter if it's a 3-way splitter (1 input and 3 outputs). (If you only have 3 connections, it's a 2-way splitter). Assuming it's really a  3-way splitter: One goes to the ONT Fios box outside (or wherever it's located). That should be the "input" of the splitter. Like you said, one output wire goes to the router. The other two outputs should go to the locations of the old installations; although when Verizon installed it, you may have not requested connection to the outlet your son used, and they may have left off the last connection on the splitter. My guess is that the wire going back outside is to the main TV outlet, because the house wiring probably has coax wires from both TV locations to outside; then Comcast simply connected to those with a 2-way splitter.

Where do you want the second STB?

If you want it in the old location (Son's), you will have to connect to the cable going there (probably outside). I would suggest that you find the two "old" wires outside that go to the two inside locations. I suspect that the outside wire location is not near the Verizon ONT box, or Verizon would have put the splitter outside and connected the two lines to it there. Tell us if you find the two wires outside and if one of them has a coupler on it with the cable from the splitter attached. Then we can advise about the next step.

If you want it next to the existing STB, you will have to get a 2-way splitter and connect it to the cable going to the existing STB. Note that two STB's in the same location will have some problems with conflict involving the remote (both will respond to the same remote). you would have to deal with that somehow. I used a simple piece of cardboard to cover the STB display that I did not want to control, then moved it when I wanted to swap control to the other STB. There are more elegant solutions but they generally cost more.

FYI, the unused connection on the splitter is refered to as coax not "ethernet". Ethernet would be a cable going to the pc from the router. (Like a phone cord wuih a bigger connector).
