Channel Goes Dark

I've been having an issue recently where the channel that I'm watching cuts out completely and goes to black, or the channel that I was last watching when I turned the TV off is completely black when I turn the TV back on.  Press the guide, and it shows up with the black screen in the corner.  Press channel up, then down, and the channel re-appears with no issue.  I am 100% certain it is not an issue with any of my TVs, either, as I had all 3 on the same channel this morning and the news turned to a blank channel with no audio on all 3.  Again, easily fixed by pressing channel up, then down, but annyoing nonetheless.  Anyone else had this issue?  Is it something related to the STB?  I have one that has a dual DVR and the others are standard boxes.  Please help, as this is an issue that may cause me to not renew my Fios next year.

You've got me there. In my personal experience, a completely black screen with no sound is an indication that you've lost your signal feed. But in that case the screen usually freezes on the last frame, then goes black. If it were one box, I would suggest an STB Auto Correct (which is still a good idea), then checking/reseating your coaxial connections from the main splitter to your STB. With all three boxes going out at the same time, I would suspect that either there is a regional outage, or the coaxial cable line between your ONT and your main splitter needs to be checked and reseated. But you say that changing the channel up and back brings the screen back to normal. Do you have to do this for each box, or just one brings them all back? Even though it would seem that one would have nothing to do with the other, you might want to reset/reboot your modem as well. What else are you doing when this issue occurs (computer startup, checking DVR, using On Demand)? Keep posting any additional information you can, or ask more questions if you've got 'em. Maybe someone will have better suggestions than I do.

So to sum it up:

  1. Check all coaxial cable (especially between your ONT and main splitter) for damage along the line, for damaged pins in the connections, for loose/dirty connections.
  2. Reboot/reset your modem.
  3. Run an STB Auto Correct on all your boxes.
  4. Post your results, extra info, and other questions back here.
