Does anyone know if I can buy a converter box from a third party company and use it with my FIOS TV? Please let me know.

If you are talking about the DTV Coverter box for the degital switch over, then no you can not.

If you are talking about a Tivo, or replay tv then yes. If it has a cable card for qam then you are good to go.

The coupon eligible converter boxes (CECBs) only work with an off-air antenna.  They do not work with FiOS or any other cable company.

The only boxes you can buy for digital cable -- including FiOS -- are the TivoHD and Moxi.  Both of these products require a CableCard ($3.99/mo) from Verizon to support the digital cable channels on FiOS.

If you want a converter box for off-air (antenna) reception on an older TV, then check out the AVS' Coupon Eligible Converter Box (CECB) thread, and especially the What CECB is the best? thread. Thus far, the best rated/reviewed CECB is the Zenith DTT901 ($55) by a pretty wide margin; Radio Shack carries them, but is almost always sold out; you can also find them at K-Mart and Amazon.

Ideally, you want to find a DTT901 manufactured in the past few months (Oct/Nov/Dec/Jan), because the newer ones feature the latest firmware and you can't upgrade the firmware on older units. This applies to most other CECBs as well. The label on the outside of the box has the build date.

If you are looking for an indoor set-top antenna, be sure to see EV's Best Top Rated HDTV Indoor Antenna Review Test Round-Up. If you are looking for something cheap, and live less than 20 miles from your broadcast stations, then consider the Radio Shack 15-1874 for $11.99.

Once again, the "converter boxes" only work with an off-air antenna like that pictured above.  They do not work with FiOS or any other cable company.
