DVR is really Lame

I had it set to record "Lost" on any channel.  It recorded on a SD channel and not the HD channel.  OMG, what **bleep** writes this code?  Maybe we need another option to favor HD over SD?  That should be the default!  Please fix that.

On a related subject.  If I had a show set to record and it recorded on SD, then later is was avalible on an HD channel, it should record it in HD and once done, delete the SD copy.  This could be optional, defaulted to "Off".

Thanks.

Oh, I can't beleve they had to bleep the word {word filter avoidance}.  It not like I said "BLEEP!"

How did you schedule the recording in the first place? Did you search for Lost? Or did you find it in the guide?

The fact of the matter is, you went to the SD channel (4, or 6, or 12, or something like that) and selected to record on that channel (or you searched for Lost and under channel information it had an SD channel #).

How is the STB supposed to know that *isn't* what you actually wanted to do? What if you just wanted to record the show in SD to save space, or something like that? I wouldn't want my DVR *changing* the channel of my selected recording on its own. Besides, the STB likely has zero knowledge that 506 is the HD channel of 6, or 508 is the HD channel of 8. They are treated as completely separate channels; it's not like there's an "HD feed" and and an "SD feed" like you described, and that they're somehow tied together within the STB's system. That's not how it works.

If you wanted to record Lost in HD, then you go to the HD channel, find Lost, and select record. If you wanted to record Lost in SD, then you go to the SD channel, find Lost, and select record. The system shouldn't then "assume" that you made the wrong choice. That's rule #1 in computer programming...

It was set to any channel.  So, it should have been smart enough to figure out that it is an HD DVR and record HD if possable.

When I changed it from any to specific, it reverted to a channel above 500, so I did not choose an SD channel when I added it.  But I think I searched for "Lost" by name, and got 2 channels listed and selected the HD channel, but I did not want to take any chances, so I set it to any.  As it turns out, any was better, because the channel was the wrong one.  I did this 1-2 months ago and I guess it was a channel that was showing repeats, not the "real" channel.  So, I got the SD show at 7PM.  Before 8PM I changed it to specific channel to get the HD and it did not record the 8PM show.  I think the 2 channels were 512 (correct) and 514 (wrong).

So, I still say, the DVR is NOT SMART.  Seems the reverse of "smart" is not allowed in the forum, so I say "not smart".

Just give me an options to say "favor HD channels over SD when 2 channels have the same show".  Please.

Thanks.

I see what you mean.

Again, I just don't think the DVR is smart enough to know that X channel is an HD channel and Y channel is SD.

The dvr software is not advanced enough to do that. Its not a computer. It only has the basics. If you want it to record HD, then tell it to record the HD channel. If you want SD, set for SD. You have to tell it what you want. it cannot figure it out on its own. That will not change. Unless they actually upgrade the equipment to computer levels, it will have only the basics.

If you want something more advanced, you will need to search the 3rd party market to find a DVR that has what you want.
