DirecTV question

Message 1 of 3

This has nothing to do with FIOS itself, but I was wondering if someone might be able to shed some light for me.

I called DirecTV to cancel my service with them and they said I needed to return my HD box to them.  I told them that I had purchased this box at Best Buy and the lady told me that even though I bought it from them, I am still only leasing it from DirecTV and that I need to return it to them.

How am I leasing it from them if I paid $100 at Best Buy for it.

That's a good question. Did she even bother to check your account to see that? Is there any possibility you leased a box from them previous to your buying the existing box? If you purchased the box, you should be able to do whatever you'd like with it.

The HD box costs $99 up front plus $5/month lease fee. The box belongs to DirecTv even though you got it from Best Buy. All the latest DirecTv boxes are leased they currently do not sell them to the consumer.
