Display on new QIP7232 DVR too bright?

Just received my new upgraded DVR - love everything about it but the display on the front (clock) - it's so bright you could direct a ship in at night! Anyone else have this problem and have you found a solution to dim the light? It lights up the entire room at night it's so bright. Short of covering it with a piece of paper, I'm not sure what to do - why would they make the LED so bright on the display??

I rather like it. Try putting a piece of scotch tape or two over it? I believe there is an option to have it stay on as a clock or turn off with the box, if that helps. The box actually never totally turns off but goes to sleep somewhat until something is scheduled comes on. Part of the Energy Star. Save a milli amp or two with a dimming feature base on room conditions. Sort of like the radio on a car dash board dims when it is dark out. I just wish the clock would stay up unless I was changing channels. It seems to go to the channel number it you do anything with the remote. Perhaps I will post these ideas for future boxes, if someone doesn't beat me to it.

that's right, there is no setting for it,  most people just put a piece of film over it, to dim it, or a piece of window tint.

I agree completely! I have this box the bed room and it lights the whole room up. Couple that with the column of LEDs on the router and even a very bright LED on the powesupply and the entire room is glowing. I find it hard to believe that putting tape over it or some other Mickey Mouse fix would be acceptable to anyone. We pay a pretty handsome amount of money for this equipment and service you think they could add 25 cents worth of electronics to the box to allow it to dim or at minimum turn off. My $2.50 alarm clock has 3 settings for brightness for the LED go figure...

And I really like the bright LEDs on the 7232. Much more readable for me than on my old 6416.

Verizon (Motorola) really should have provided some kind of brightness control though, so we could all adjust it to fit our needs.

We actually use it as a nightlight in the living room. It's low enough to the floor to serve this purpose admirably. YMMV

Not sure why these people gave you a ghetto fix "scotch tape" really.. ox, **bleep**. Anyways press Menu, set-top box, standby front display,  turn off display..

I don't know about the other folks, but I want it dimmer when I'm watching TV, I don't give a hoot when I'm not.

It's not a ghetto fix ... but a rather creative low tech solution -- although the suggestion really meant a cellophane tint film with adhesive on one side (like tape).  A nice dark film dims that display quite admirably.   The problems not with when the box is turned off, but when it's on and you are watching a movie or something in a darkened room.  The display can be quite distracting.

There IS a way to make the clock light dimmer in the settings menu! Menu>settings>set top box>LED brightness. If you can't find it, call tech support, they will gladly help 🙂
