I had several recordings on my external sata drive before getting my dvr replaced. Now it shows the external as empty. How do I get it to show my recordings on my external?

You can't.
As has been said many, many times here and other places, the external drive is "married" to the DVR on which it is formatted, and it cannot be accessed by another DVR. To use the external drive with the new DVR you must format it with that specific DVR, and of course any data that is on it will be erased.
If you still have the old DVR, and if it works, you could hook that back up and then you would be able to access the recordings.
That is just the way it works, at least for now. Hopefully some time in the future Verizon will deliver some way to connect the external drive to a different DVR and access recordings from the prior DVR. But not now.
