FiOS Internet and TV using Coax and Ethernet from ONT?

Hello, here is what I am looking to do...

Currently I have a coax line from the ONT split to the Actiontec router and the STB, I then have my own router plugged into the Actiontec (LAN on Actiontec to WAN on my router).

This causes a Double NAT issue and is a moderate mess though everything works fine more or less.

What I am looking to do is run a cat5 line from the ONT to my router which I understand Verizon is generally willing to activate.  I will then disconnect the actiontec from my router.  The question is does the actiontec stay in place as it is with coax in from the ont and will it continue to get a connection for the STB? In this case, will my router get its connection from the ethernet straight from the ONT?  Or do I have to switch it so that the Actiontec is patched into my router (LAN to LAN or LAN to WAN)  So that only either my router or the actiontec gets its connection directly from the ONT?

Thanks!

Generally speaking the actiontec router needs to stay connected if you want VOD and guide data.

You can get rid of the double NAT issue if you set your router to work in bridge mode. So all dhcp will be handled by the actiontec and your router is just a go between.

Yeah, I know the actiontec has to be in the equation somehow, but when verizon activates the ethernet can the actiontec just be on the coax by itself with the stb?  Or does it haev to access the internet through my router on ethernet for vod and the guide?

As long as the COAX is still connected you will get VOD and guide data to the stb.

If the ONT is Ethernet enabled then the COAX WAN for MoCA is disabled.  They are an "OR" function - both can't be active at the same time.  In order for the Actiontec to be able to get guide and VOD from the Internet connection, the Actiontec would have to be connected to the OP's router LAN connection and the COAX on the Actiontec would only serve as the MoCA LAN (supplying guide and VOD for the STBs).

There is an excellent FAQ on various connection methods at DSLReports.com (section 3.0 - networking).

Excellent, very helpful guide... I had not stumbled upon that version before.  I expected that I would have to put the AT behind my router so this is all very good.

Thanks.

For reference, I have had good luck with the following setup.

In my case, the Linksys WRT150N is the primary router (internet) with the Actiontec sitting behind it (tv).

As a result, you can have your cake and eat it too :smileyhappy:
