FiOS TV installation questions: full house installation
linda732
Newbie
My current services are:
  • FiOS Digital Voice Unlimited
  • FiOS Internet 25/25
I am strongly considering adding FiOS TV.  I do not currently have cable TV, and the coaxial wiring in my house is shoddy.  I'd like to have the house re-wired on installation day, with better cabling and better-positioned coax outlets.  Just want a great user experience.

  1. Will Verizon (or their subcontractor) run new cabling throughout my house and, if I would like,  install new coax outlets?  If so, is there a reasonable chance that a technician would run the cabling as a 'drop' into my rooms (from behind the drywall, rather than solely tacking the cabling to my house's exterior)?
  2. I'm in a multi-family home.  The basement apartment family FiOS TV/Internet/Voice -- all on an account separate from my family's account.  Please confirm: Verizon will install a separate, additional ONT box for my family, correct?
  3. I want a total of 6 rooms wired for cable: 4 on the top floor and 2 on the first floor.  However, I'm not getting 6 cable boxes.  I own a Tivo, and for the foreseeable future, I'm only going to need one Cablecard for that Tivo.  No cable boxes at all.  Is the fact that I'm not having a bunch of actual cable boxes installed going to prevent me from being able to have the Verizon technician install cabling to all 6 rooms?
  4. Roughly what will the installation cost be for what I've described above (just looking for a very rough estimate)?
Thank you

  1. Installs are for existing coax locations. Installs usually do not include fishing wires thru walls.
  2. Each customer usually has their own ONT
  3. The tech can connect all 6.
  4. Installs above normal connection of existing locations would be billed as time and materials. You would need a tech at your home to get an accurate price.
  • What happens during installation?

Your installation includes connecting up to three televisions with existing coaxial outlets (including installation of Set Top Boxes). It also includes programming of the FiOS TV remote control for your Set Top Boxes and televisions. Additional TVs can be set up for an additional charge.

  • How much does it cost to install extra outlets?
Your Verizon FiOS TV technician can install new outlets for an additional charge. Depending on the area and your home's set-up, our technician(s) may or may not fish walls or move furniture when installing or replacing wiring or installing Set Top Boxes. The technician will determine installation specifics with you on the date of installation.

The first thing to understand is that these forums are not "conducted" by Verizon personnel and that your questions are usually answered by other users.  Therefore treat all answers with caution (including mine).

The second thing to understand, particularly with respect to your precise questions, is that in general for the type of work you want done, you will be far better off having the work done by an outside electrician who specializes in that type of work, rather than by the Verizon install technicians.  The problem is not that VZ personnel are incapable of doing such work, but rather that they really are not going to give you the work you want at a price you want to pay, followed by the changes and corrections that inevitably occur.  They are very good at setting up VZ equipment, including an ONT, a router, coax splitters, etc., but running a complex coax or Cat5 network is another matter.

In my own home I ran all cabling myself, and I have considerable experience in that area.  It does not appear that that is your situation, so you must locate a local contractor who has experience in low voltage and network installations, and who has at least some familiarity with a typical Verizon FiOS install.  It should not be all that hard to do.  Then you will be able to discuss the job face-to-face and come to terms.

If you try to do this by discussing the install with VZ sales and customer service, and then hope that this information will be relayed in detail to the actual individual who does the install, I'm afraid you will be very disappointed with the end result.  You can find numerous examples of this problem in these forums, and I can tell you of my own issues (all of which were resolved, but not necessarily with ease).

If you have additional specific questions, please ask.
