Fios P265 Remote to Control TV, STB, and external soundbar system connected to the TV

I recently purchased a Sony HT-CT260 sound bar system, which is attached to my Panasonic Viera TV via optical cable.  I already have my Fios P265v1.1 remote configured with the TV.  Is there any way to use the same Fios remote with the sound barto control the volume and mute settings?

I was recently working with another contributor to see if we could get his system up and running again. I posted two solutions for him to try, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet on whether or not either of them worked. Regardless of which one you use, you will still have to turn your soundbar on/off either manually or with its remote.

Solution #1

Set the STB to control the volume.

Menu > Settings > Audio > Volume Control > Variable > OK > Exit

  1. On the remote control press & hold the OK & 2 buttons, release together. (The LED will blink twice, then stay lit.)
  2. Press 9 - 5 - 5. (The LED will blink twice, then stay lit.)
  3. Press the STB button. (The LED will blink 3 times, then stay off.)

The volume and mute will now be controlled through the STB. Set the soundbar volume to a moderate level.

Solution #2

If this one works, it would allow you to control your soundbar volume directly, but would no longer control your TV sound levels. Officially the codes on the 2-device remotes are only for TV's. But that doesn't mean that you can't find one that works for your soundbar.

KEY FIX

  1. On the remote control press & hold the OK & * buttons, release together. (The LED will blink twice, then stay lit.)
  2. Press and hold the key that does not work correctly. The remote control will try a new code every second.
  3. Once the (sound bar) responds correctly, release the button.
  4. Press the OK button to save the setting.

I've never tried this option since I've never had your issue. I do not know if you have to do this with each button (Mute, VOL+, VOL-), or if programming one fixes the other two. I think I would start with Mute since the code changes every second and you need an easily recognized response in such a short period of time. Other areas of the instructions say that this process could take up to 8 minutes to search through all the codes. If you reach the end of the codes before you release the button, the remote buttons should blink 4 times rapidly and then go dark.

Hope one of these works for you.

Update: Solution #1 will probably not work with digital audio connections (HDMI, optical, digital audio coax). To use this option, you would need to connect to the box with analog audio connections (composite/RCA).

I tried option 1, and as you said it is not working because I have the STB connected via HDMI to the TV.  The only thing it does is mute the volume if I bring the volume level all the way down.

I tried the key fix but perhaps I am doing it wrong because I can't seem to get it to work (either that or the remote doesn't have the peopwer key for my ddevice

Any other thoughts?

The only other thing to try is to connect your soundbar to your box directly using the analog audio outs (red & white RCA jacks). Let me know if you need help doing this. This should allow option 1 to control the volume on the soundbar, but not the TV. Your other choices are to purchase a 4-device remote from Verizon and hope that it has a code to control your soundbar (can't get it to control my DVD or blu-ray players), or buy a universal remote that can control everything. The other person I was trying to help with this issue has informed me that he cannot connect directly to his STB. He is going to try and find the technician that made it all work the first time. I'll post back here if he has success.

I see was never answered after April so can I presume no one ever found an answer. Here it is in December 2013 and same problem, Sony TV, Sony soundbar, Verizon DVR box Quip 7274 I think it is offhand.

Tried numerous connect and setting combinations to no avail. No way I can figure that allows for Verizon remote to control sound bar volume. Remote controls everything on TV no problem. Connected sound bar optical to TV, nada. Connected optical box direct to soundbar, still nada though sound comes through soundbar fine must still be adjusted via soundbat remote.

In todays age this should not such a problem.

So anyone ever solve this?

On my Insignia soundbar what I did was connect the soundbar audio directly to the Verizon STB audio out and changed the remote to control the STB volume instead of the TV. Then I plugged the soundbar into the switched outlet on the back of the verizon STB.

In the menu of the STB changed it to turn off secondary outlet when STB is turned off.

On the soundbar turn it on and set the volume up high.

The Insignia stays turned on; when the power is removed on the STB outlet the sounbar turns off. When the STB outlet is turned on the soundbar goes back to on state. This controls turning soundbar on and off and the STB controls the volume of the soundbar now.

Not the preferred way but works. Might work with the Vizio

This worked for me:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo64W77u0cM

I followed the directions in the YouTube video using the AUX button for my Sony sound bar. Basically, where the video said to press the TV button, I pressed the AUX button and followed their instructions. And after pressing the Fast Forward button repeatedly,  eventually my Sony sound bar responded to my remote (i.e., it turned off and then I pressed the OK key to store the code as directed by the video), and now I can control it using my Verizon remote. Make sure you press the Fast Forward button and not the Skip Forward button (which is what I did the first time I tried it and nothing happened).

Hello,

I'm replying to this now a year later from the last post because it needed to be confirmed that doing what this video says works. Follow the instruction and hit the 'aux' button instead of 'tv' - keep pressing that forward button unti the sound bar shuts off. I pressed the forward button at least 30 times. It seemed like I was pressing it for an hour, but I assure you, Just keep pressing it at a steady rate and it'll catch it. I have a Sony sound bar ht-ct370, Sony 65' bought in June 2014.
