Fios STB and Samsung Tv wide fit problem

I hope someone out there can help a non techie person...I have a Samsung 40" 1080P TV, just purchased in January. I have not been able to get a full HD picture, I get full width, but have the black box on the top and bottom. I have both the STB and the TV set to 1080 and picture size to 16:9. Samsung says I should set my picture size to the "wide fit" option, which is a selection in the picture size options, but I can't do that because it is grayed out. Samsung claims that it is grayed out because Verizon is not sending the correct signal. Verizon says it is Samsung that is not set right. So neither one fixes the problem.  I wait a few weeks and start my calls over again hoping I will reach a rep at either Verizon or Samsung who will fix this.  All I get is a lot of finger pointing. I have another HD STB which works fine on my LG TV so at the Verizon suggestion I swapped out  the boxes on each of the TV's the LG still had the full picture but the Samsung didn't.

Both my STB's are  Motorola HD QIP6200

Has anyone else had this problem and maybe any suggestions and maybe success.

How is your STB connected to your TV?  I had the same problem with my 26" Samsung and a 7100 STB.  The FIOS tech who did my initial install claimed that there was a problem using HDMI cables with this STB, so he used regular cables. After a week, I added an HDMI cable hook-up to see what would happen.  Not only did it work fine, but I got the full 16:9 picture when viewing the HD signal.

Hello pke - here are some settings that I use on my Samsung xxln550. First, make sure you are using HDMI or component (red/green/blue RCA jacks) cables to ensure the 1080i signal. Next, go to your Verizon STB menu > settings> video settings> video format and select either 720p/16:9 or 1080i/16:9.   Pick the one that looks best to you. Also, in the settings menu, go down to SD Override and set to "off."  For the Samsung, go to the menu and for "video" category (the TV icon) scroll down to picture options and select 16:9.  That should do it. Keep in mind that not all programs will fill the screen entirely because that is simply the way they are, they often look like a picture frame effect with black borders all around. Some stations articially stretch the signal to fill the screen. SD programs will mostly have black bars left/right, some will have the picture frame effect. A true HD picture should fill the screen, such as the Weather Channel HD, unless it is a movie which could be have an aspect ratio which still yields black bars above/below. Sometimes a Tv will have various "zoom" type settings where you can play around with the display for a more pleasing picture. That is a personal preference.  Think of the above settings as a starting point you can always return to.  Let me know if this works for you.  Thank you.  Edit: One more thing - keep in mind that certain TV settings you choose may "gray out" other options in the menu. I would recommend a middle of the road starting point like "standard" to ensure all options are available.
