After the snow in the DC area I have had marginal Direct TV satellite performance. I want to switch to FiOS but there is so much information - dated, contradictory and confusing.
I want a FiOs home media DVR in one room and standard HD receivers in two other rooms. I want it perfectly clear that I can record on the home media DVR (in HD)and play it on the other HD STBs (IN HD!!). They are connected by standard cable wiring through a splitter ( incoming signal is split to 4 TVs or STBs). This is the only connectivity that can be done - will it work?

That will work. I have a Home Media DVR in my media room and a HD STB in my bedroom and there are no problems watching DVR stuff from the TV hooked up to the regular HD STB. The only issue I have had is that from the regular HD STB you can NOT start a recording or delete anything on the Home Media DVR. That would be a great feature for them to add though.
