Getting FIOS TV/phone/Net- how will the wiring go to a TivoHD w/ c-cards & 1 Verizon STB?

Hi all-

I have a TivoHD on the big TV downstairs and getting cable cards for that, and also getting a Verizon standard def STB for the upstairs bedroom.  Also getting phone and internet.  Here's my layout:

The ONT will be in the basement- I'll need to get video and ethernet to the first floor for the TivoHD and ethernet for the xbox360 and bluray player.  I then will need to get ethernet to the second floor for the desktop in the study, and coax to the Verizon standard def STB on the bedroom TV.  Also our phone line is upstairs in the bedroom as well.  Hope you can all picture that in your mind.

Now- where should I put the router, or where does it need to be?  I wanted it near the first floor TV.  And what needs to go into/out of the router?  And can I use the RG6 in my walls already or do I need Verizon special cable?   I have RG6 and ethernet already in walls and looped in the attic to drop in the second floor bedroom.

Anyone with sample/actual layouts who can chime in and offer some advice as to how the tech will likely need the wires run?

Thanks!

-Danny

RG-6 is fine. Router needs COAX from the ONT location. Also Ethernet CAT5 or 6 to what ever else you want connected to the router. Router can go almost enywhere. It depends on where you have your CAT cable and coax run.

Thanks for the info.  I did see that link before and it didn't really answer my questions.  Does the coax have to go to the router first for the TivoHD or the V-STB to work?  Or will there be a splitter out of the ONT and a coax to the TivoHD, then another to the second floor for the V-STB, and the router is just for internet access?  Does the router get used for FIOS TV?

Out of the ONT, the coax would be split three ways.  One line would go to the Verizon router, one line would go to the V-STB, and one line would go to the TiVo.

The Verizon router provides a 100Mbps network connection over coax (TV uses 0-860MHz on the cable, the network connection uses 950-1150MHz), which the Verizon QIP STBs and DVRs use to download guide data and VOD over the data connection.  Without the Verizon router -- or a substitute like the Motorola NIM100 -- your Verizon STB/DVR wouldn't support guide data or VOD.

TiVos do not require the Verizon router, because they do not download guide data from Verizon over the coax.  TiVos download guide data during the early morning hours, using your choice of:  wired ethernet, wireless with the 802.11g adapter, or a phone connection.

KenAF-

Thanks so much for the response!  I think I get it now.  2 questions based on your answer:  You said out of the ONT the coax is split 3 ways-Tivo, V-stb, and router.  The V-stb needs to connect to the router to get info and PPV and OD and all that.  Do I need to run a line from the router to the V-stb or does the info go back and forth through the ONT?  I saw only 1 coax input on the router, so I'm guessing that's how it works.  Just want to confirm so I don't need to run an extra RG6 to the V-stb.  If that's how it works, then this will be my set-up- ONT in basement.  Coax split 3 ways in basement- 1 snaked up 2 stories and drop for V-STB in bedroom, 1 to first floor direct to Tivo, and 1 to first floor to router (near the Tivo).  The router has ethernet jacks to run to XBOX360, and a hardwire ethernet drop up 2 stories to my home office for my desktop.  Sorry for so much writing- trying to make it easy to visualize....

Also- how does the phone install work?  I have one phone jack in the house, standard phone wire snaked from basement, through walls, in attic, then dropped to the home office.  Will they use the old copper wire, or do I need to run coax to the phone jack as well?

Thanks again!  I'm really glad I found this forum and the good folks who answers all my noob questions!  🙂

No line from the router to the STB is necessary.

That's correct, although don't expect Verizon to run ethernet cable from the router on the first floor to your home office on the top floor.  You'll have to do that, if it's not done already.

You don't have an ethernet line running down to the basement, do you?  If you did, you could get a ethernet install rather than a coax install.  By that, I mean Verizon could use the ethernet jack from the ONT to the router, rather than COAX from the ONT to the router.  This would enable you to use your own router; you would connect the Verizon router to your own router (as necessary to supply their boxes with guide information and VOD).

The ONT has a RJ45 jack.  They'll disconnect the RJ45 cable from the existing telephone box and plug it into the ONT.

You da man!!

Thanks for the info!  Now back to my attic to finish stapling Cat5 cable to the rafters!
