HD TV resolution

I have a Sony Grand Wega LCD TV that's 2 years old.  Since day one when Verizon installed it, I have noticed that the picture and resolution are not as sharp as the TV's displayed in stores like Walmart.

I had satellite before Fios and the technician used the same cables to install the TV.  Is this an issue I can take up with Verizon and would a service call be necessary for which I will need to pay for?

Please advice and thanks in advance for the help

Trying making some adjustments on your TV.

If you are having issues as far as PIXELATION or CHOPPINESS, then this would be a cabling issue.  If it's a issue of sharpness, it may an issue with the TV or the cables going from the TV to the cablebox.  Please verify you are having this issue on ALL CHANNELS.  If you find it may only be a one channel, then we can take a look at the Video Hub Office and find out if they are experiencing the same issue.

In a slight chance everything else checks out OK, replacing the cable box would be the next step but I would doubt that would resolve anything.

Now are you talking about sharpness for HD channels? SD channels? All of them? More information would be great! Thanks.

Charles:

Thanks for responding so quickly.  My problems is with all channels.  If I watch a DVD, it"s just like watching regular TV.  My Fios HDTV programming looks just like regular TV.

What I am talking about is that even though it is HDTV,  the resolution of colors, vividness, and sharpness is not there like I see on TV's displayed at stores like Costco, Walmart or Sears. I am paying for HDTV programming, but I just don't see the difference.

Thanks again,

The store display units' contrast is often boosted much higher than you'd have it at home in order to impress potential buyers.  Could you be comparing your apples to the stores' oranges?

We're not back in the analog days where TVs varied little in quality from year to year.  Each year, manufacturers make strides in picture quality, so it is unrealistic to expect a HDTV from 2-3 years ago to look as good as the latest models.

That said, there are several steps you should take to ensure that you are getting the best possible picture on your TV.  First, make sure you are using the right connections.  Confirm that your FiOS DVR is connected to the TV with either (a) component cable or (b) HDMI cable.  Click links for pictures.  You can't get HD resolution with any other cables or connections.

Once you've confirmed that your FiOS DVR is connected to your TV with the right cables, confirm that the Motorola DVR is set to output 1080i.  Once you've done that, confirm that you are watching actual HD channels (all HD channels are numbered 500+).  Be aware that some HD channels, like the local networks, tend not to offer much high-definition programming before 7pm on weekdays.

Once you've got the right connections, with the Motorola DVR set to 1080i output, and you're watching an actual HD channel....then it is time to check your television settings.  You can find threads for most popular HDTV models on the AVS Forum; search for the make and model of your TV.  If you have trouble locating the thread for your TV, indicate the model number of your TV and I'll see if I can help.

What you said makes a lot of sense to me.  The industry has advanced by leaps & bounds.  But as I mentioned on my original posting, I had satellite before FIOS.  The installer from Verizon used the same cables that were in place.

Like you said, maybe I need component cabling or use a HDMI cable.

Your advise is helpful and I will look into it.

Thank you,
