HDMI cable giving low res (480 dpi) on non-HD channels

I hooked a HDMI cable up to my Sony LCD (not sure the model, but it is less than 2 years) to change from the component cables.  When I switch from a HD channel back to a non HD channel, the tv actually tells me it is at 480 dpi.  When I used the component cables, the non-hd were at 720 dpi.  Why would the HDMI be giving me lower resolution?

What is you SD Override setting?

Menu -> Settings -> Video Settings -> SD Override.

Mine is set to OFF. I did notice that somehow it was reset to 480i on Friday.

However, I don't know if it will affect resolution.

By definition, SD channels are 480i.  SD Override is the setting that passes SD channels as is (480i), without any format conversion.

When SD Override is OFF, the box will process and convert 480i SD channels to 720p or 1080i.

I thought so, but when I answered his post I wasn't able to check the input resolution on my JVC. I was able to confirm on my Samsung later.

In attempting to improve the fuzzy sd picture resulting from 1.6 download, I have tried to use sd override to measure comparative effects of different settings (none actually help).  Box will not hold off, 480p or stretch settings following turnoff, but persistently reverts to 480i upon next system turn on.  Using hdmi out (to receiver to tv) only.

Anyone know of a fix to lock other settings?

Ouch, so the STB's settings revert back to defaults after each session huh? That's bad. What exact set-top-box do you have? When did the 6.1 roll-out come to your area?

All settings or just ones related to resolution? (try an alternate clock setting or closed caption setting for us if you have time & see if these get re-set too.)

Are you by chance powering off things at a master switch like a power strip or other? If so this would result in default settings at each use.

Thanks for the additional info. I haven't heard much of this before and it's possible your box just didn't correctly load the update.

Box is 6416-2.  1.6 download was sometime in November (Florida Gulf Coast).  A few days after original download, in an effort to resolve fuzzy sd picture (which did not work), techs also downloaded program to facilitate whole house dvr playback, which had not previously worked on other hd box.

Surge protector power strip is always on. Tried cc setting at your suggestion.  It holds from session to session, as do all others that I know of.  Only one that reverts seems to be sd override, and it does it no matter what selection I make.

Tried to get 7-series dvr box (having been given some misinformation on tech line about the whole house dvr capability), but now am scared of those given reports of other issues.

Had virtually no problems (except for some pay per view glitches) before 1.6 download.

Thanks for looking into this.

My 2 HD boxes (6416 and 6200) seem to lose the SD Override setting from time to time. I am in Huntington Beach, CA (VHO3).

Don't ask me when these occur, or why. I have been a FiOS TV subscriber sine 11.11.08.
