Handshaking issues, Toshiba vs. QIP 6416-2

I recently purchased a Toshiba 19AV500U HDTV plugged it into my QIP 6416-2 DVR with a 15 ft. HDMI cable, both the feed to the DVR and the HDMI cable are seperated from any electrical wiring by more then 3 feet. Often enough to be an anoyance when I turn on TV and DVR my TV comes up looking for the HDMI signal and then afer a while the screen begins to turn white and slowly continues until the entire screen is white and not even the remote works on the TV except to turn it off.  I turn both units off and on again and it sometimes does it again. After 1,2 or even 3 times of this cycle it finally works appropriately. It does not always do this, however frequently enough to frustrate me and especially my spouse. I have tried changing the DVR and tried the original HDMI cable that Verizon sent. Anyone familiar with this issue

There have been many issues with HDMI handshaking. Some say it's Verizon and some say it's the other vendor. The new set top box software version 1.6.2 may solve some of these issues, when it is released. But not if it is the TV manufacture's implementation of HDMI. The only sure way to solve your issue is to use a compnent cable that is analog, but still provides 1080i. I know this is a hassle to have multiple cables, but it should solve your issue. You can check with Toshiba and see if they have a firmware update for your TV, or if it is a known problem with them.

  I have a Samsung TV that has been connected via HDMI to the QIP 6416-2 DVR since day one with no issues. But other with different Samsung sets have reported multiple issues.

This is a known Verizon software issue!

the Verizon boxes are designed to work with hdmi but they don't, you shouldn't have to resort to switching cables (yes it would work) but why should you have to.

the system doesn't work as designed, they are responsible!

Call and get credit for every day this has happened, I do!

This is not a verizon software issue.  This is a Motorola and HDMI standardization issue...if you have service with another service provider that uses motorola boxes, you are going to have the same issue.  My parents have the same issue with their Samsung and I got component cabling, fixed the issue.

Thank-You all for your response. I have been doing more reading in manuals and internet and found a couple of issues that I had been unaware of before. The toshiba sources suggest that I turn on TV first and turn off TV last when I am using HDMI interface, there statement "it allows the HDMI or DVI device to reset properly". I also realized that turning the SD setting in video settings to off was not activated and I may likely have not taken the extra step to make that the default setting. Since making both of these corrections I have had a decrease in the events.

    That being said it has not completely gone away and still is an anoyance that shakes my confidence in both Toshiba and definetly Verizon.  Every time it has had these problems, I notice something suspicious on my DVR, the display will blip  "d" on it multiple times, it is random timing and is probably in the millisecond range for duration, however it makes me suspicious of the box or more so the actual incoming signal. I have in the past had my power checked out on the house to insure I do not have an excessive amount of noise on my AC lines, I now also have surge/ spike protection on both the TV and the DVR.  When I last talked to Verizon about this issue they assured me that the incoming signal is redundant and it is not possible to get signal loss or gaps. However it is interesting and yet to be explained to me why my DVR does this and most of the time coincides with my handshaking issue

Charles I agree with you. There have been many non standard standards. Well I hand shake and you hand shake so we all handshake. Doesn't mean we do it the same. It is a pain. I have a Samsung LNT4665FX/FAA 46" running at 1080i and HDMI with the QIP 6416-2 1.6.0. It has always worked great. It should not matter who gets turned on when. But it is a toss up. Motorola DCT 6416 is the same box but without the QAM/IP stuff and it has issues from what I have read.

I guess this could be argued until the cows come home. Like Fords crashed because of bad Firestone tires. Who was at fault?

Well with samsung, the TV's processor will over process the MPEG4 signal that the STB sends it.  There are emails that Samsung has sent to us (which I obviously cannot disclose publicly) proving this.  People can yell and yell at verizon to "fix" this but our hands are behind our back right now. It's your choice to understand the issue or not...I wish I could promise "hope and change"...LOL
