So I decided to bite the bullet while I'm waiting and get on the $40 upgrade list. Got the okie dokie email yesterday. Email has a nice picture of the Cisco 500GB DVR. Will be shipped out in 3 - 5 days. Cool.
So I go and poke around to see the specs on this new box... memory and such, wanted to see an image of the back panel... etc. Guess what I find? Several reports on forums that this box will not play well with any Motorolas and that the IMG will be 1.6 and I will actually lose features. So now I won't be able to watch recorded shows on my QIP7100. None of this was mentioned when upgrading.
Someone please tell me if this is true or not. Because if it is I need to cancel this "upgrade."

My Motorola 2732 box has an "M" logo in the upper right corner of the front panel.
IMG 1.6? That would be like getting Win 98 from Microsoft wouldn't it?

If it is a Cisco box it will get 1.9. But it is true it will not play well if you have Motorola boxes.

===========================================
There was no actual text saying what I was getting, but the image in the email that I had to click on was, without a doubt, a Cisco.

If it is a Cisco box it will get 1.9.
========================
I hope you're right, but that is certainly not what I've been reading. I've also read the same thing several other places like DSLReports.
=============================================
But it is true it will not play well if you have Motorola boxes.
=============================================
And that infuriates me if it's true. Once again my time will be wasted. No mention of it when I ordered it. I use the multi-room feature every single day. Guess I may be canceling the "upgrade".

It is jprobably just me, but I can't think of any good reason to pay $40 to get hold of a box that you have to RENT for a monthly fee.
Why not just give them back their OUTDATED Box and NOT pay for it for a few months. I'm sure they will then be glad to give you a NEW box for free so they can again start charging you $20 a month for it.

Because I don't want to go without a DVR for a few months and there's no guaranty what NEW box they'll give you when you upgrade again.

If you have previously answered this I apologize, but where are you located? Verizon is using the Cisco boxes only in a very limited area. I am confidant that you will be getting the Motorola 7232 DVR, that is what the $40 offer was for. You can go here to view the various Verizon STBs and download the User manuals, but here is a snapshot of the two different DVRs, Motorola and Cisco:
I took advantage of the $40 offer and got the 7232. I don't think you need to be worrying. And by the way, the 7232 is a very nice DVR, works very well for me.
