Motorola Box Won't Stay at 1080i

My TV supports all standard definition and high definition resolutions up to 1080p. I know the VerizonFiOS Motorola box I'm using supports up to 1080i. But when I manually set it in the Video Format section in Settings it will only temporarily stay at 1080i. Once I turn the box off and back on it reverts back to 720p every time. Is there a way to lock the box to display in 1080i?

It sounds like your TV is set to 720P. Check that first. The STB shouldn't change back like that.

My TV automatically adjusts to the input. So like with my DVD player it switches to 1080p. WIth blu-ray, it does the same. When I switch it to Verizon it switches to 720p.

In your Verizon STB goto menu/settings/video settings and change the output to 1080i, if your TV is 1080p chances are in will upconvert the Vz 1080i signal to 1080p.

I appreciate your assistance, but what you are suggesting seems to be part of my problem. I have gone into the settings and manually forced it to change from 720p to 1080i and it will stay at 1080i until I shut the box off. When I turn it back on it reverts back to the 720p setting.

I want to be able to make it "lock" into the 1080i setting so that I don't have to manually change it every time. Is there a way to do that?

Have you looked at or made any changes on the the Hidden User Setup Menu ?

From the Front Panel of the Verizon HD STB or DVR:

Power off the STB and then immediately press the MENU key on the front panel. If your TV is on, the on-screen menu lists the settings you can configure:
Use your remote control or the cursor keys on the front panel to navigate the on-screen display:
• Press the ▲ and ▼ keys to highlight the setting you wish to change. Press the ► key to select an option for that setting.
• To exit the setting and move to another setting, use the ▲ and ▼ keys.
• To exit the menu and save your settings, press the POWER or MENU key

The TV Type should be 16:9 for a Widescreen and 4:3 for a Regular Screen

The HDMI Output should be 1080i

The 4:3 Override should be 480p

I tried that, all it seems to do is turn the box on. I don't see any kind of menu display. Is there a trick?

Brian had good instructions but since verizon added that "press menu to turn on the stb" feature, you need to add an additional step.. Try this

Start with the STB turned on.

With everything on.  then press  Power-->Select-->Menu   in that order. That will bring you to the hidden video menu.

To play it safe. What I would do is when that menu comes up. Then go to the bottom where it says "reset to defaults" and reset everything.

Then start over at the beginning and set the output to 1080i

Most shows broadcast in 720 not 1080..its possible that because the show is broadcasting in 720 maybe thats why its reverting to that. Try to find a station that only broadcasts in 1080 and experiment with that..see if it switches to 720

spacedebris, I was able to get to the "secret" menu and change it to 1080i, but unfortunately it didn't stick. It's still reverting back to 720p.
