Multiple Set Top Boxes, One Remote

I am trying to expand my home control system to include my TV and STB in my bedroom. Currently I am controlling my STB for the living room with an IR emitter from my control processor. My problem is the two boxes are going to have to share one IR port so I am having trouble controlling them independently. I think I need to have a full set of discreet IR commands for each of the two STBs.

Does anyone know how they do this in sports bars and such? If you have two tuners sitting right next to each other, is it possible to send IR signals to control one at a time even though the signal from the remote is hitting both?

Kind of hopng something like setting one STB  to "A" and one STB to "B" and then having a whole set of type A IR codes and  type B IR codes.

The fios STB do not support this. Every STB uses the same controls, the DCT700, the SD STB, HD STB, DVR and MR DVR all use the same.

I was afraid of that. Do you know if it is a hardware limitation or something Verizon could possibly implement with a firmware update or something?

I really want to be able to control both STBs from my touch panel and if they can't share an IR port I am going to have to fork up some money for a control processor upgrade...

I am sure it would be possible for them to do it, but I don't think they will. There are not enough people that need or want this feature to have it implemented. But that's my just my opinion.
