The user manuals for the remotes are useless. No where on it or on the website can I find out the function of all of the buttons on the remote. Some are obvious but some are not. For example, what do the four colored shapes labeled A,B,C, and D do.

Check the above link.
Generally the A-B-C-D buttons are found in almost every system, and are programmed by the provider or by the viewed program itself. Sometimes they function as "voting" buttons or "Viewer input" buttons and the instructions are on the screen. Like "to vote for contestant 1 press A, for contestant 2 press B...etc. I think Verizon has programmed them to perform other shortcut functions when you are not viewing a program.

The a, b, c ,d buttons are generic "system" buttons. Their functions change for the needs of the service. Right now, the only one I know is the 'b' button. Its currently being used as a diagnostic button. When you loose signal or the box comes up with an error it will tell you to "press the b button to run diagnostics". Also the 'd' button used to operate the "Widgets" prior to the remotes being equiped with a "widgets" button (the early remotes didnt have one)
But anytime a new service or feature is installed. they will use those buttons as temporary access, until the remotes can be redesigned with a button for that service.

THanks for the reply. The ral problem is that the DVR manual says something like "use the remote's swap button to switch between two programs. Button used will depend on remote." Without a complete listing of the buttons on each remote and what they do , such information is nice but useless. DirectTV had remote manuals which told you what the keys did as well as give you instructions on how to program the remote.

What remote instructions are you referencing? I have the Phillips remote, and in the instructions for this remote it clearly state (for the example you site): "Press Last to return to the last channel." So if you're using the DVR instructions you might want to try the remote instructions at http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSTV/Remote+Controls/SetUp/SetUp.htm for the Philips RC 1445302 Remote. They're more complete relative to describing button functionality..
