Poor FiOS HD Picture Quality - Had numerous tech appointments, no help at all

I switched to FiOS October last year and I have never been satisfied with the picture quality on HD.  In fact, the picture quality has been worse than what I use to get with Cablevision.  The HD picture looks very compressed and has that sort of mpeg 'smear' you notice with heavily compressed divx video files.  Whenever there is fast movement or bright lights flashing on the screen, there is HEAVY macro-blocking.  I have had numerous tech appts (at least 5) in which the Set-top, ONT, main coax-splitter, in-wall outlets, coax connectors and house wiring ALL have been replaced.  My signals coming into the box are very strong but yet I still suffer from bad HD picture.  I am now convinced that there is something wrong with the fiber lines coming into the home.  I think the signals on the fiber lines on my street are not optimal.  Is there anyway I could please have the fiber lines checked?  I have been constantly complaining about this since late last year.  Thank you

Well, the fiber lines are not a likely issue. the fiber is digital, it either works or it doesnt. no inbetween. Besides, they have to clean it when they swap ONT's so it has already been cleaned. Now not saying it is the problem, but at this point, it sounds more like a problem with the TV than the service. It sounds like Verizon has already replaced every piece of their equipment that could cause this issue.

Do you only have the one HD tv? or is it multiple tv's?

Have you tried component cables instead of the HDMI?

How about your neighbors, any of them have HD? How does their pic look?

its not the TV, this happens on all coax outlets in the home.  The TV looks great on other sources such as blu-ray or xbox 360, no macroblocking on those sources, only with FiOS TV.  Happens both on HDMI and Component.  Some channels look worse than others.  FX-HD is horrible with consistent macroblocking, same with NBA TV HD.

Okay so its not the Tv It Is the compression rate on the tv signal.. Call the F S C  ask for Tier 2 support  and tell them that a Verizon Tech That you know advised you of this issue..Are you on Long Island?  This is not typical but we have seen this issue in isolated cases. Probably a network issue. They may need to rebuild your circuit.

I'm experiencing the exact same issues here in Maryland.    I'd call in to Verizon tech support but that is such a pain dealing with those people I'm reluctant to do it...  I guess that's one way to keep complaints down: make the your tech support a nightmare to deal with.

Brand new customer here... Video quality sucks!  HD is heavily compressed and they use every opportunity in between programming to reduce video quality... understanding technology.... seems that verizon has a limited amount of bandwidth to support this video network...

I really miss my high quality Dish Network system and full screen guide menus... some things are cool on this system.. but the quality of the video makes me feel cheated... and sometimes I don't even want to watch TV...  I was spoiled for so long with high quality video and now its hard to live without...  Channel organization was much better with Dish netowrk and having local channels in full HD quality was very nice to have and enjoy..  😞

Verizon does not compress any HD video signals, and they do not change video quality "in between programming." That would take an extraordinary effort on their part.

When you are talking about broadcasts in "full HD," there are currently no stations that do that. The most you'll get is 1080i, and channels like Fox and ESPN only do 720p.

I'm seeing the same issue here in Northern VA.  It is on both HD channels and SD channels.  I am using HDMI.  I have not yet called Tech Support to have them troubleshoot.  It happens on both of my HD TVs.  I've seen it on Comcast SportsNet, USAHD, StarzHD.

I am using coax to the boxes.  Would it be better if I had them come out and use Cat5 instead?  Any other ideas?  It has definitely gotten worse in the past few days.

Hi   I too am seeing a degradation of picture quality. For the first 10 months I would consider it exceptional now I see a grainy picture which is very distracting. Not on all channels there are some which are still very good but most HD is grainy. Oddly enough the two best channels are in Spanish wish I was bi-lingual. Fios has been here and checked SNR and replaced STB no help. The technician admitted the picture was grainy I have replaced HDMI cable and bulb for my Sony Wega 42 inch which is 4 years old. I could easily blame the tv but not so with some of the reception being excellent. Fios has no clue what is going on here rolling the dice on a new tv purchase is a little over the top. Any one have any comments
