My remote is programmed to turn both the TV and STB on or off when the power button is pushed, which is fine with me. Lately, though, it has sometimes -- and it's strange that it's only sometimes -- been turning only one of them on (or off, as the case may be). When I hit Power again, it just reverses the situation -- now the one that was on has been turned off, and vice versa -- so that it takes endless fiddling to get them to get them both on. I tried pushing STB (or TV) and then Power, but that doesn't help.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a permanent solution?

I've had Verizon for two years, and it has always done this. Sometimes, after the STB comes on and the tv doesn't , you can hit the menu button and the tv comes on. I have no idea what the deal is. My solution is to plug them in separately.

I didn't read your problem fully, now that I have you can ignore the bottom info basically they are just out of sync with one another, so all you have to do is walk upto the tv (don't use the remote) and then hit power, that should put them back in sync with one another, and now when you hit power both should turn on and off. IF they still don't turn on and off when you hit power after that, then you may need to do the stuff that I posted at the bottom.
You can do this from the in home agent found in your STB menu system under Menu -> Help -> In home agent -> program remote. Then you'll go in there, pick your model of remote and it will give you a ton of options to choose from and it will walk you through it, or you can use the manual. from the manual where it's titled the power key
Manual can be found online here

yes it happens
it happens with other providers too, and other universal remotes, as well
If your TV is OFF and your STB is ON.... press the TV button, and then press POWER
If your TV is ON and your STB is OFF... you should see the message on screen to press MENU to turn on the STB
once BOTH devices are ON or OFF, that is when they are "in sync"
As another person suggested, you can always simply walk to the devices and press the power button that is physically located on said device

This is how you solve this.
First make sure both tv and stb are on.
1] Press and hold down STB. While holding it down, press OK
2] Release both buttons at same time.
3] Press 9-7-7
4] Now press, [TV], [STB], [OK]
You are done. Just press power normally and it will turn both TV and STB off at same time. AND then never again press the TV and STB buttons or it will loose its programming again.
