It depends on the connection.

CC is not sent over HDMI and I believe for component, so the STB must handle them.   For common SD connections your TV can do CC.

OK, thanks for that feedback. Yeah, I am using HDMI, been using it for so long I tend to forget there are other connection options.

Are the Closed Captions for FiOS transmitted in an alternate video sub-stream as opposed to being generated and rendered by the STB?  The reason I ask is because with IMG 1.8 on the QIP-7232 P2 in a high-rise MDU deployment, the Closed Captions look terrible, almost illegible on a 52" LCD.

Does anyone else here use the Closed Captions that has noticed this?

I don't see any change from my old 7216 to the newer 7232. It is/was possible that the CC font style, font size, outline, etc was changed from your setup on the old DVR. About a year ago I changed the CC display on one of my DVR's to suit my almost-blind mother. I forget the exact methods and can't do it right now because it's recording and can't be interrupted. I will post later when I can again determine how to do it and if it's still available.

FYI, most programs use CC italics to indicate 1) quoting (actor reading from a letter, for example) or 2) spoken words out of view, not showing the person speaking. Not all programs adhere to that format. Also some move the CC box up or down to avoid conflict with commercial logos, other text, phone numbers, etc. Some also control the font and override the DVR/STB/TV default font. Bottom line is that the original program usually determines what is displayed and where.

HDMI does not convey the section of the datastream containing the CC information, so the STB must decode it and overlay it onto the visible screen before it goes to HDMI.

OK I'm back with more information about the CC setup.

To change your Closed Caption setup, follow the steps here:

1) Enter the User Settings menu : Start with the DVR/STB ON. Press the power button on the DVR (Off), then on the remote control, press the OK button, and then the Menu button in fairly short order. The display on the DVR should show 1080 or 720 (or whatever screen resolution you have previously chosen). In a few seconds, a menu appears on the screen like the following:

Notice that all the CC settings are auto. The screen shot at right is the result (skinny characters).

Note: if the Closed Caption value is Disabled, you will not be able to change the rest of the settings. Change it to Enabled using the instructions in the next step.

2) To change the settings, use the Up and Down buttons on the remote to move the pointer on the left side up or down. Use the OK or Left or Right buttons to change the setting at the pointer line. To effect any changes, the Settings value at the next-to-last line must be changed to User, or else all settings will become Auto. 3) Exit this menu using the Menu button on the remote. 4) Press the Power button on the DVR to turn on the box again.

The following images are of my preferred settings and a screen shot of the same:

Notice that the characters are bolder and easier to read (for me anyway).

The following images are of a setting I created just to try to mess up the display, which I did:

Notice that it is pretty much illegible.

I just got the new 7232P2 1.9 DVR. I wanted to enter the hidden menu/service menu to no avail.

The problem is as soon as I hit "MENU" (after Power OFF =>OK=>MENU in a split second) it turns the box on again. I tried like zillion times and it doesn't work.

I need to enter the service menu to change the audio settings, since the sound doesn't work only on my standard channel ( I used to have the same problem with the old box-7216, and I fixed by doing so).

Can someone help me with this problem, please? Thanks a lot

I tried to contact Verizon Customer Service Tech, here is how they helped me...

i am sorry for this situation, but unfortunately my main tool is under manintenance and i cannot access to your account or run any tool that can help you fix the issue, i apoligze for this situation and recommend you to contact us back tomorrow morning

I just tried it with my 7232P2 (with 1.9) and it worked, but only after several tries. You have to be quick with the OK button. If your tv is connected via HDMI, there may be a wait time of a few seconds before you see anything on the screen. But the DVR will show the aspect ratio (probably "16:9") numbers right away (this used to show up as the Output type i.e. 1080), then just wait. Power off with the power button on the DVR---OK on the remote---Menu on the remote.

I figured out long ago that CC with the transparent background worked best (for me)..

Great post with pics, GD
