Remote broke!

I have been a customer of Verizon for a long time. The remote that shipped with the box stopped working. Verizon wants to charge me $14 for a new remote. I am already paying $230 a month to Verizon. Instead of just sending me a new remote and keeping the customer happy, I got a 'take-it or leave-it' tech when I called in.

What should i do?
Threaten to leave? Go to Comcast?

Come on Verizon - looks like $14 isn't going to hurt you much....

Consumer revenues were $3.6 billion, an increase of 4.7 percent compared with second-quarter 2012. Consumer ARPU for wireline services increased to $109.67 in second-quarter 2013, up 9.4 percent compared with second-quarter 2012.
FiOS revenues grew 14.7 percent, to $2.7 billion in second-quarter 2013, compared with $2.4 billion in second-quarter 2012. ARPU for FiOS customers continued to be more than $150 in second-quarter 2013.
Sales of strategic services to global enterprise customers increased 4.8 percent compared with second-quarter 2012 and represented 57 percent of total enterprise revenues, compared with 52 percent in second-quarter 2012. Strategic services include cloud and data center services, security and IT solutions, advanced communications, strategic networking and telematics services.

Verizon is like any other business, they are in it for money.

The remotes they give you arent rented so they become your property unlike other providers. I know Comcast you actually rented them and had to return them if service was ever terminated. You also paid to rent them as part of your monthly fees for equipment.

Verizon used to give free remotes out if one needed a replacement but people abused it which is why they started charging. I do think they should at least go back to offering 1-2 free remote replacements once a year or something though like they were doing or at least 1-2 free remotes for as long as you are with them.

If you want a new remote ebay is the place to get them. They are dirt cheap and are probably from all of the people who abused the program in the past.

You can also invest in a way better remote such as a Logitech Harmony 650 which cost me $40 new on ebay and controls everything under the sun.

New remotes are much cheaper on ebay as Roaddogg said.

Thanks - I'd bet Verizon could get me one even cheaper.

I don't disagree with any of your points. However, I feel that they spend so much on customer retention when your contract is about to expire that they could kick out a new remote.

THE REMOTES SENT NEVER HAVE 100% OF THE BUTTONS WORKING - THAT'S WHY WE ORDER NEW REMOTES ! DOES THE RIPOFF NEVER END ? ALSO - CAN YOU TELL ME HOW YOU GET AWAY WITH PAYING THEM ONLY 230 PER MONTH ?
