SATA revisited: SSD for external drive?

I installed two 2TB versions of one of the recommended drives (so I exceeded the capacity recommended) to my two 7232 DVRs. The DVRs have such pitiful storage but I don't want to lose my content yet, so I have not upgraded to the new shared DVR platform. I'm waiting for the next platform if I do any upgrading.

Those 2 TB discs work great for about 2 or 3 days, then they become laggy, mess up the response time for clicking on the remote, and eventually the DVR becomes unwatchable. So I have to unplug them until I need to access a program later.

It almost seems that the external drive can't keep up with the DVR's content. So I wonder if an SSD would work at all. Does anyone have any experience trying this?

Most are totally transparent to the box.  Not trying it because I went to Quantum and then was sold to Frontier.  There may some specific speed requirement.
