I am going to be upgrading my hd DVR to one with more capacity. I am really concerned that I will lose all the programs I have stored. Does anyone know if there is a way for me to save these externally so I can transfer them over. Secondly, once saved does anyone know a way that I can save them as a mp4 so I could watch on my ipad

The only available option  when replacing a current DVR is to record the content in real time to an attached DVR recorder.  The reasons are in part related to copyright issues, and there's really no way around them.   For additional documentation, type "save dvr" into the "Ask The Community" search box at the top of this page.

Can you save them? Yes. You must either have a device that can record them in real time (e.g., DVD recorder) or computer hardware & software that can record them in real time.

Can you change their format? Yes. There are several computer programs that can convert formats.

Can you transfer them onto your new DVR? No.

None of these solutions are simple, but you only asked if it was possible. Best solution is to watch as many shows as you can, order the new DVR. Connect up the new DVR and let it start recording your shows. Finish watching everything on your old DVR and return it during the up to 30 day exchange period.

So, if I connect both the new and old DVR.  Can I save what I watch from the old to the new?  I"m upgrading from an old DS TV to a new flat screen and need to upgrade the DVR in the process.  I'd really like to keep the saved programs as they are really old and rarely air.  Also they are not available from the video store...

No, you cannot transfer programs from one to the other. You can have both connected (assuming you're not upgrading to Quantum) and still watch the saved shows but once they are on a specific DVR (and married external drive) they cannot be moved.

OP - You didn't ask this, but in case you don't know this, you CAN save your settings to the Cloud (series you have set up to record, channel Favorites, ...) and then restore all those settings to your new DVR when you get it.

Go to Settings --> System --> Save Settings.  The settings will be saved for 30 days I think.
