Set Top Box Problems

Im going to be installing a home theater in my basement soon and I am planning on getting another Set Top Box but I need one that can work without me aiming a remote at it... The only one I could find was TiVo which is an option considering how Verizon treats me I'm beginning to consider switching to comcast... If anyone knows if Verizon boxes can work without a remote aimed at it let me know because I can't hold a remote over my head to change the channel

There is a free app for your phone that will control the remote, dvr etc - fios remote. works via wifi to the VZ router and then over the netowrk to the Verizon stb's.  Doubt that it will work with a 3rd part stb though.

Also won't work if you have a multi layered in-house network i.e. different routers and waps on cascading subnets.

Many of the FiOS STB's have a jack on the back panel for a remote extender.  This is a small unit with a few feet of cable that you can locate in a place where it is visible to the remote while the STB remains behind closed doors.

You can find the official Verizon for Motorola boxes here:

Cisco boxes have the jacks as well; spend some time with Google and you should be able to find a compatible extender.

There are many home theater control systems that will convert RF to IR using small emitters attached to the front of the controlled equipment.  Again, you can find these online as well as at your favorite audio/video store.  Note that these tend to be pricey.

Happy Turkey Day!

My FiOS DVR is in a closed cabinet and I use the remote extender mentioned above. It works flawlessly.
