I has an issue about a year ago where whenever I would push a button on my remote, the STB would take forever to respond. The problem went away after a month or so.
Now, the exact same problem has returned. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it happens, it happens on all my STBs. I noticed the problem popped back up when Verizon decided it would pop up advertisements every time I turned my box on.
If Verizon doesn't resolve this quickly, I'm switching back to Comcast. I'm not going through this aggrevation again,

Try the following to eliminate (or at least greatly reduce) that problem:
1. In Menu>>Television>>Recommendations: Select "Turn Off"
2. In Menu>>Television>>Promotions: Select "Disable"
3. Check Menu>>Message Center every couple of days. If there are "important messages" there, you can only ignore them for so long before the system will force you to view them. For me it's when I press the DVR or GUIDE button. Since the overwhelming majority of those important messages are advertisments I tend to not check them. Until I an unwelcome ad pops up and intrudes on my viewing. Not that I know the cause, it is a simple fix.

I can try those things, but it doesn't explain how the problem only occurs sometimes.

Acutally it does. You STBs are trying to access the server that the holds the ads and is getting delayed or confused doing so. And this delay doesn't happen all the time. By turning these off, the STB will not be delayed. You should also ensure popups and interactive TV is disabled. I've disable everything that would come close to requiring an interaction with a server while simply watching TV and get zero instances of delays.

Everything is turned off and there are no messages. It's still unresponsive.

The last time this happened, verizon fixed it by having a software update that fixed an issue with an ad server. Seeing as how this problem started occuring at the same time that new startup ads were showing, there's a strong possibiility that verizon has once again messed up my TV viewing experience so they can squeeze a few more dollars in ad revenue.
