Still can't watch a movie on my DVD player using the P265 FiOS remote

Finally got the DVD player hooked up to out flat screen TV but I can't seem to get the TV input button (A/V imprinted on the actual button) to switch to the DVD player.  The movie is running in the DVD player but I don't visually see the movie, just whatever TV station is on.  Do I need to re-program the remote?

When I depress the "A/V" button it mutes the audio and nothing else happens.  The actual mute button does not mute the TV.

Good for you for at least getting your DVD player up and running.  I know that can get confusing.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that I would suggest:

If you can't see the movie picture, make sure that the channel on your flatscreen TV itself (not the Verizon channel number on  your remote) is set to channel 3.  You probably have it set up that way as it is since you can still watch your TV programs.

On your flatscreen remote, there should be a "source" button on top.  Press that button because you have to change the "source" from "TV" or "HDMI" to "AV" (if you're using a composite red, white, and yellow cable for your DVD player) or "component" (if you're using the red, blue, and green component cable in cojunction with the red and white audio cable).  Once you do that, then you should be able to view your DVD program.  You probably have the source set to TV, which may be why the AV button isn't doing anything.

If your Verizon remote is already programmed to control your TV, it should be able to mute the TV sound.  I suppose you could re-program it to be sure and go downt he list of codes but if you can't mute the TV sound but you can turn on the TV and control the volume with the Verizon remote, then it might be the batteries.  Try replacing the batteries and then see if you can use that AV button and the mute button.   Your Verizon remote may be defective and just needs to be replaced.

So if your problem is still not resolved after taking those steps (with the source button, making sure your remote is programmed and that the batteris have been replaced), I would suggest that you call tech support.  I've done that many times before and when it's concerning a specific technical issue, it's not that bad and it usually resolves my issue.  Someone from tech support should be able to walk you through the process to help you troubleshoot everything.  It's too bad you can't program the remote using the codes just like you would with a TV.  But there has to be a solution.

Don't give up.

****Justin or Mark, could one of you please step in to help?  I have no idea if I'm telling this man the right thing. ****

Thanks again, Questioning.

Your responses are always quite detailed and concise. Just the way I like them. 🙂   I will try an do what you said tomorrow or over the weekend.

I think Justin and Mark understand this better than I do.  I reached out to Justin who believes that your P265 is not programmed properly which is why the AV button won't switch it over but he will get back to you soon as well.

You need to program the remote for whatever type of DVD player you have, if the P265 has four buttons. The new P265 Verizon remotes only have two options, DVR and TV. But like you have tried, the input button has not switched the input to the TV but only muted it correct? Let me guess, it is a Vizio model TV? I have the same issue and have had to use TV remote to switch inputs. Try using the TV remote to switch inputs and if you get the DVD to work, you know it is a Verizon remote problem. I have found those remotes do not work well as a multi function remote. Here is a link to the remotes, but I do not believe it will be much help.

http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSTV/Remote+Controls/SetUp/SetUp.htm

1. Determine which input you are using on your TV.

2. Go to your TV Menu with your TV Remote and program a label for that input. "DVD". I program labels for all my inputs. FiOS, DVD, Computer, etc.  This will make things easier. You will need to follow the instructions for your model TV.

3. Use the TV remote to switch inputs for the TV. Best work around for now. It will let you use your other inputs.

I have not found a solution for my Vizio model TV, and the input button still mutes the TV. I have gone through all the codes for programming the remote. Also the automatic programming where you push the button until the TV turns off. The remote works fine on one model Vizio but not another. I have no issues with my Samsung TV. Some have gone out and purchased a Harmony multifunction remote that comes with many features and various flavors, but is also more complicated.

Perhaps someone else has some ideas that could help us both. I have the remote with two buttons. TV and DVR. So I must switch inputs with the TV remote and use the DVD remote. I know yuk!. I have three sitting here. TV, FiOS, and DVD. What a pain.

Sorry not the best solution, but what I have found. You may not have a Vizio TV, but I am sure it could apply to other brands.

Mark,

I am writing you this response from work so I don't have the remote in front of me but I am pretty sure that it is the newer one with only 2 options.    The television in question is a LG (Model 47LD450) television.

Any way I can buy or trade for the P265 remotes with 4 options?   I will just re-program this one for now and see if that corrects the "A/V" issue.

Thanks guys!

I am not at home where I can experiment with my P265 remote on my setup, but from reading here I suspect it is not going to work for you.

1) I have not looked up the LG model TV you have, but if it is a newer one that right off the bat presents a problem. When Verizon buys these remotes (the P265 and/or the older ones), they have codes for the TV brands and models that are then known. But the TV manufacturers keep changing the codes on their new TVs, and there is really no way I know of for your remote to get updated with those new codes. Maybe if you got a newer P265 it might have newer codes in it, but I would not bet on it.

2) You might be able to find one of the old Verizon 4-button remotes on eBay. I know they used to be available there, have not looked lately. But just like the P265, the codes are going to be old, and may not properly control the new TV inputs.

3) Is the DVD player an LG like the TV? If so you might be able to control the TV input from that along with the DVD player itself. I have a Sony TV and Sony DVD player, and both the TV remote and the DVD player remote will control both devices (for the most used functions at least).

4) Does the remote that came with the TV switch the inputs? If so, I suspect that is the best you are going to get.

5) Does the TV remote have buttons to control a cable box? If so you might be able to match it to the FiOS STB and use just that remote.

6) As Mark said, you can buy programmable remotes that will do almost anything, but setting them up can be somewhat complex. If you choose to go this route you might want to find a friend who can set it up for you.

Sorry, but I really think you are going to wind up needing to use two remotes.

OK, I am now home and have experimented with my P265. I have an old SD TV programmed into the P265 and the A/V (Input) button works just fine on that TV to switch inputs. So I believe that, unless you can find another code that works better on your TV, you are out of luck using just the P265. Sorry, but that is all I can add to my previous comments......

This what I have found on my P265 Remotes on the Vizio. Being the bedroom TV I could not justify the cost of a fancy remote. The input button would only mute the sound and not switch the TV. I have tried different codes. If you of anyone else finds a solution to the P265 Input button issue, please post it here.

Thanks

Why are all of these Verizon remotes so different?  Can he just upgrade his P265 to a newer programmable one?  It just seems odd because on all the other remotes like the one I have, there is a list of codes that I can fall back on to program it for any DVD player and I noticed that on the P265, it doesn't have any of those codes.

I have a total of 5 remotes in my little basket: Verizon, TV, DVD player, CD player, and the receiver remotes.  My CD player and stereo receiver are separate, so I don't have everything put together in one home entertainment center.

Thanks guys for adding your input to this because I really was getting lost.
