You are not alone. I've hit this very same issue more times than I can count. If you know that you're near the end, it is better to just let it fast forward to the very end. Then the program will automatically back up a minute or so giving you enough time to trick play to where you want to be. However if you are watching the program from an STB, this usually won't work either. Until they decide to fix this glitch, don't forget that after restarting the program using the chaptering function can get you back to where you want to be a lot faster than 8x FF. (But again chaptering does not work when playing a recording from an STB.) Also, try the skip forward function (10 sec.) when getting really close to the end. It is more exact than FF and less likely to end by accident.
