TV shuts off several times a day

My livingroom TV (supposedly with a HD STB) just goes black and into "standby mode" several times every day.  I've reset the modem/router and even unplugged/rebooted the box but the problem reoccurs within 10 seconds or 10 minutes or 30 minutes. This is really aggregating!!!! My bedroom TV with a STD is unaffected as are both of my computers.  Going to the "troubleshooting site" on Verizon has been no help as my STD looks nothing like those pictured and has no clock ( my STD box does!!!!!) The Verizon site is useless!!!!!!! Can someone please help me?

The first question I would ask is, when you say "standby mode", are you describing a black screen with the Verizon logo and a message "Press Menu to watch FiOS TV..."? If yes, then keep reading. If no and the screen just goes black and stays that way then you might be having an issue with your TV and not with FiOS.

Could not find a good reason why a functional STB would enter standby mode several times per day at seemingly random intervals. From what I could find, there are three reasons an STB would enter standby mode:

  • The STB has been powered down using the power button.
  • The STB is left tuned to a channel that you are not subscribed to.
  • The STB has an HDMI connection to the TV and has sensed that the TV is off.

These describe the box going into standby mode without resetting/rebooting. If you are seeing a red screen when you turn the STB on, it has lost power and been reset. This could happen because of:

  • a power outage
  • an update
  • an internal error reset
  • an overheating/ventilation issue

I would:

  • perform an STB Auto Correct
  • reseat all your cable connections
  • contact Verizon about a possible replacement

Let me know if you need help doing these.

FYI - your STB is a model 7100-P2. It's the only one without a clock. You can click here for more info.
