Can anyone tell me if there is a TV out there w/ built in tuner so i can skip renting the converter box?
I would like avoid having any box on my desk or wall.

Most TV's these days do have QAM tuners. But even with a QAM tuner you will only receive unencrypted channels, which for Verizon are 1-49 and 460-549, the local broadcast stations.
Another option is finding a TV with a cablecard slot (less common as cablecard never really caught on) and renting a cablecard from Verizon for a few dollars a month.

To do what you would want, you would have to change your package to local digital only, and you would lose any subscriptions and VOD access
Moving to the CC option would at least allow to to view a bigger package, but you would lose any VOD
