Turn on DVR without seeing the score...

Does anyone have any suggestions for turning on the DVR in the middle of a sports broadcast (that I am recording) and NOT having it show the score? As everything turns on, the sound and video are playing, of course. If I'm fast, I can try and mute the sound, and cover my eyes. Then, I usually hit menu, and try to cover the picture in picture of the game in the top right while I navigate to the DVR menu. Is there a better way to do this?

Thank you,

Hello,

I would think that as with most TV providers, when the set top box (and/or TV are/) is  turned on, the Verizon FiOS STB will display the current live programming of the channel previously viewed.  Hence, if you last watched a game on ESPN or CBS on your FiOS DVR then as soon as you turn on that particular STB, that channel's feed is presented right away.

If I am understanding your question correctly, if you are prone to watching sports games and would rather not see the live feed immediately shown (which would display the playing teams' current scores), a simple fix would be to remember to change the channel to one that would not usually show games (for example, a news or weather channel, etc.), and do this step prior to turning off the TV (and/or STB).

This way, if you intend to merely watch a recorded program (and not the live feed) then you can just click 'DVR' without having to pay attention to what's on the background-- live TV.

Remember that if you are recording one (1) show, then you don't have to stay on that channel while the program is being recorded.  The restriction to 'watch a show while recording' only applies if you have two (2) shows being recorded at the same time on the DVR.

You can create a recording through Guide, OR via the search function, OR by a manual recording, OR via the easy record button for live TV, and then afterwards when you've confirmed that the show is scheduled to record, then you can go about your merry way of watching other TV programs.

Yes, but that only works if you know what channel the DVR happens to be on at the time. AND you know what it is doing. Let's use last night as an example. I don't think I had watched TV since Sunday. Between then and now, many things have recorded. Both tuners had been used simultaneously probably several times. Last night, the Washington Capitals played. They are on a channel that would not be tuned to unless we are watching the game. So, when I turned on the STB, that was the game that was being recorded, and the STB was displaying that channel.

When I had a TiVo, I was able to press the TiVo button PRIOR to turning on the TV and guarantee that I would see nothing. The TiVo would also be showing the channel being recorded, but when I pressed the TiVo / Menu button, I would know the STB was in a state with no video showing. The TiVo in this case had less features than the Verizon box. The Verizon box keeps a small window of what is currently playing in the upper righthand corner. During most times, this would be a benefit. However, in this instance, it is a HUGE problem.

I'm not trying to imply this is a shortcoming of the Verizon box. I realize this is a rather subtle problem. I'm just trying to find out if someone else has figured out something I have not. My wife and I usually don't get to settle in to watch hockey until 8-8:30pm, for a 7pm start. So, this happens almost every weeknight there is a hockey game.

You can change the channel of the STB before the TV is turned on.

I'm sorry, I misread your question.  Please disregard.

How would I go to the program in the guide and hit the record button?  My TV is OFF when I start.  The program I do NOT want to see is currently on the active tuner being shown, and comes on as soon as my TV turns on.

Changing the channel before turning on the TV only works if both tuners are not being used for recordings.  If they are, a small window comes up asking if you want to stop one fo the recordings.
