Verizon and the Motorola 6416 DVR - WHY?

So Saturday I decided to "upgrade" one of my STBs for a second DVR. I ordered it on line (only to find that it will be $1.00 more per month starting today) and chose to pick it up in the store somewhat near me. I get to the store where I see I am about to receive an old Motorola 6416-2 box. I state very nicely that I would rather have something newer or at least not covered in the dust from the previous "owner" and am nicely told that this is all we have. Take it or leave it. I take it, thinking "do I really have a choice?"

I get home and hook this thing up (after I clean the dust and dirt off of it), and while it's setting itself up I call Verizon and ask if I can order a Motorola 7232 DVR with the knowledge that I will have to pay a one time "upgrade" fee. The nice CSR tells me that I will have to pay the multiroom price for the DVR even though I already have one 7232 acting as my multiroom DVR. She says, "doesn't matter, the only way to get another 7232 is by paying for two multiroom DVRs." Well, I'm all about throwing my hard earned money away to Verizon, but that would be an out and out theft so I couldn't agree to that and we said our goodbyes.

At this point the new "old" 6416 was done loading software and I fired it up. I was disgusted to see that it could not display the full screen guide on my 16:9 TV and the 1.9 IMG just looked bad. Then the hard drive started to make loud scratching noises every few minutes. I tried to record a show, which it did, but froze continuously during playback.

Called tech support who stated the obvious, "box is bad, we will send out a "new" one. I asked for a newer model and was told they had no control over what I get.

TO THE POINT: Verizon, stop pushing out old, obsolete equipment that is incompatible with your current IMG. They don't even sell 4:3 "square" TV's anymore, so all of your current equipment should be able to display the full screen guide. I pay the same as everyone else for your service and I want the same service that everyone with newer equipment gets.

At least clean up the turned in equipment. Don't give me someone else's dust filled mess that you not only don't clean up, but don't even test it to see if it is in working order.

Let me request a better (or newer) box. If I have an expensive new LED or plasma TV and I have a need for this equipment then send it to me. People that still have older TV's don't care, so give the 6416 to them.

And last, don't try to soak me for more money. I already pay a good deal of money for my service. Don't try to force me into services that I don't want or need in order to get a STB that is at least somewhat up to current standards.

So after receiving help from Verizon Tech support, as well as the very nice Verizon employees that monitor this board, my problems have been resolved. Received a Motorola 7216 box today in good condition. Hooked it up and everything is fine. Full screen IMG 1.9 and a working DVR.

To all involved,

Thank you

That is NOT true, the CSR was dead wrong (shocking!!!). i have two 7232's and I only pay ONE multi-room fee, the other is the standard dvr fee.

Wouldn't it be nice if customer service was consistent?   Today I was told that you could only have ONE multi-room dvr per account...
