adding another TV set

Hello.  Currently I have 2 televisions (old TVs), both have the 5x9 cable boxe.

I am adding a 3rd tv,  a flat screen.  I understand that there is an option to the big 5x9 box, something smaller.

My family doesn't DVR anything, so that 3rd cable box wouldn't need that option.

The "smallest" box available is the DCT-700 Digital Adapter.  This is an SD only, no guide, no VOD, no Widgets box.  Only outputs are coaxial and composite (yellow video, red and white audio).  Very bare bones and won't deliver any HD.  Other than that the only boxes in most areas are the QIP7100 P2 (HD non-DVR black STB with no clock), QIP7100-P1 (silver, bigger with clock), 6416 DVR (old and not recommended as it has no future path to IMG upgrades due to memory / processor limitations), and the 72xx DVRs.

Not familiar with the Cisco models that are deplyed in some areas, but if you have Motorola you can't mix with Cisco in the same location.

The newer black STBs (QIP 7100-P2)  are also an option.  They are not as small as the digital adapter but they are smaller than the silver QIP 7100 STBs and give you HD, guide, VOD, etc.

You haven't mentioned if you have already purchased the other TV. If not, you might look for a TV set that supports a cable card. That would allow you to connect directly to the Coax without the need for a STB. The only downside is there would be no program guide, and no video-on-demand (VOD), but you would receive all the programming. The Cable card is also less expensive than an HD capable STB, and obviously requires no space since it goes inside the TV.

Verizon would need to install the cable card, which some reps will tell you will cost about $80, however it isn't true. Basically the current FCC regulations require that cable cards be available, and installed without charge. I believe the cable card 'rents' for $3.99 per month.

Good point regarding possible use of a cable card.

Cable Cards are now available for self install. No charge for shipping and I believe still $3.99 a month. They might have gone up $1. If you go to the My Verizon site for your account, and select add or remove equipment under the TV option, Cards are now an option for ordering.

I have a Tivo with a cable card. But with no channel guide option from any provider, I believe it would be hard to use a card.

As mentioned, the QIP-7100 P2 is the smallest HD box with a guide. Here is the page with the box information.

Each link has dimension information along with model numbers.

I listed the 7100-P2 just after the DCT and indicated that the P1 was larger but the P2 had no front panel clock.

I provided a link.Smiley Very Happy

Good info from everyone.

I had a DCT-700 pluged in durring some work Sunday and could not wait to get my guide back. I believe cable cards are good for a purpose, like TiVO or Moxi, but with so much content and no guide, it will make you go nuts.

Does anyone know if there is a TV manufacture that is cable card ready and internet connected for guide info? Now that would be the kicker!
