Will Verizon support eSata in the near future.  I am interested in connecting an external hard drive to my DVR.

Have been told by someone within Verizon that it should happen sometime early in 2009.

Depends on your definition of "near future".

It took them 9 months to fix a problem with their injected PSIP, 10 months to fix the bugs in IMG 1.5 (which itself was delayed several months while introducing new bugs in 1.6), the HD channel expansion that was promised for "Spring 2008" didn't start until summer and is still ongoing for some markets, ........

Draw whatever conclusions you wish from past history

Sorry I was double checking this earlier.

Currently we don't support it and I can be 100% that it will be supported however there is an esata port on the back of the 7216 HD DVR the other units do not have this option.  It is possible that it will be done later on there is NO time table on this feature at this time

Anyone here if there's any new news on the whole "DVR Expander" compatibility??? I like many people, am going nuts trying to keep clearing my DVR so I can record new content... There just isn't enough room on the 160g (as i recall) drive for any real qty of HD content and I hate recording everything in SD as this defeats the purpose of having FioS in the 1st place (hello, best pic & aud available by any means short of BlueRay DVDs)

I really wish all the media giants would just "Get It"... HARDLY ANYONE WATCHES TV SHOWS WHEN THEY ACTUALLY AIRS ANYMORE - ESPECIALLY IF THEY OWN/RENT A DVR!!! (sorry, had to get that off my chest)

UPDATE: Jan 21st 2009

eSATA / External storage support: NEGATIVE

Just got off the phone with Tech Support. No plans to do this at this time. Sounds like major fallback happened. Tech Support realizes the demand but is now saying it's not going to happen either now or in the forseeable future.

This smells like red-tape with licensing content. Making sure you don't have enough space to have "too much personal content" plus no external drives as to limit "illegal tampering with data", etc...

Anyone have any 'alternatives' besides buying a TiVo Box?

I'm running out of room recording all these HD versions of House. Combined with having a wife who wants to record period romantic / introspective relationalship movies is nothing more then a recipe for hard drive space disastour so hurry up.

At one point, the issue was supporting DRM on the external drive, but that was addressed a long time ago.  My sources tell me that Motorola has had trouble making eSATA expansion work reliably.  Drive corruption is not uncommon, and this causes testers to lose all their recordings.

As for alternatives, there is another:  Moxi.  At $800, it is more expensive than a TivoHD with a prepaid lifetime subscription ($650).
