Got a dvr (Motorola 7232 2) this week to replace one that had problems, well now this box has a problem with pixelation while recording. Any ideas anyone.

Pixellation has become the bane of digital television, just as ghost images and color fadeouts were for analog. But there is no set of rabbit ears or other antenna to adjust to improve the picture. So, what can you do? Not that easy. Pixellation could be caused by a thousand things, some not even inside your house. I think of pixellation as an interruption to the flow of the 1's and 0's, or the TV not buffering and reassembling them properly. Try to isolate the problem. Go into the menu and do a diagnostic to check the signal strength - usually 23-26 is considered good. Does the type of pixellation occur on other TVs in your house? If no, then it's likely isolated to your DVR setup. Could you hook up a different TV to the DVR? If that is not possible, ensure all cabling is securely attached. Ensure that your cables are good quality, high speed HDMI. You might even try component cables plus audio cables to see if there is any change. Make your connections direct from the DVR to the TV. Try disabling any sort of TV processing that may be working, such as 120HZ, and the manufacturers various motion-flow routines. As a last item, you may try resetting to all the facory defaults on all your eqiupment, rebooting and starting over - essentially wiping clear any internal memory. You mentioned that it happens on recorded material, what about live programming? If live Tv is acceptable, it could just be another bad box. If both live Tv and recordings are bad, backtrack your cabling to the splitter to ensure good connections and no kinks. The coax itself could be deficient if pixellation is on all TVs, and both live and recorded material. After all that, you may need a service call if the problem is outside your house. Lastly, as I run out of ideas, you might check avsforum.com to see if your TV is particularly prone to such poor processing. Good luck.

I'm having the same problem. It does happen on live TV, but it doesn't seem as frequent. Although I do watch a lot more recorded TV than live, so I can't say for sure. What I can say for sure though is that this never happened prior to the major DVR update they did earlier this year (Around February maybe?). I had FiOS for almost 2 years prior to the upgrade and I never had a single pixelation, stalling, skip in audio, or anything. The picture was always crystal clear and perfect. However, ever since the major software update, I've been seeing the pixelation and audio skipping happening all of the time. It is extremely frustrating to say the least! I called them and they tried resetting everything and doing all that they could on their end but it didn't work. They sent me a brand new DVR and it still does it. My amateur diagnosis is that they have a problem in their software, however I haven't seen a whole lot of other people complaining about this recently. I have tried just about everything, now I'm just crossing my fingers that it will fix itself! Unfortunately, that usually doesn't work.

Video processor chips get VERY hot when rendering HD content.  The airflow inside the 7232 is quite poor with the hard disk sitting up in front of the processor and one small fan in the back.  When the vidproc gets hot, all kinds of bad results appear ion the screen.  I learned from my Dish Network days you have to make sure your dvr is getting lots of fresh cool air.  Make sure you are not trapping your dvr in a closed space and then add some airflow by using a USB fan or a laptop fan rest.  You may just solve your problem.

This is after you have rechecked every connection and cable to eliminate the problems the support folks always ask you about.
