I would like to program my DVR now for a show that is going to be broadcast on 1/31. When I do a search for that show, it does not come up. Am I too early? How far in advance can the DVR be programmed?
The DVR typically has 10 days of data available, so you are too early for 1/31 from the guide.
You could set a manual recording from the DVR menu if you know the channel and the start and end times (you obviously know the date).

To add to Keyboards' response:
From your FiOS TV Remote, go to the channel of the show you'd like to record and click on:
DVR -- Create Recording -- Manual Recording --
Scroll down to Start Date, click OK and change the date to 01/31/2013.
Scroll down to Start Time, click OK and change the Start Time.
Scroll down to End Time, click OK and change the End Time.
Scroll right to 'Save'.
Wait until you see the 'Success! Your show was scheduled.' message.
Finally to check, go to DVR -- View Schedule and scroll to the end of the list and look for your manual recording.
By the way with IMG 1.9 the Guide allows you to view 13-14 days out for the TV listings by using the Fast Forward button.
