The one standard definition Motorola 2500 set top box I have is making a squelching sound any time I have it on.
Have you tried simply unpluging the power from the box for a minute or so?
if not, try that
if that does not resolve the issue. call tech support at 1 888 553 1555 and have them send a reset... if still not, have them replace the one box
