hi all. I recently upgraded to an HD DVR and have encountered a problem. The remotes don't always work (both the new one and my exisiting one) consistently. Some times, it'll work. Most times, I have to keep pressing the key and, eventually, it'll work.
I have to watch the box for the green light so I know that it received communication from the remote. Very annoying. Sometimes, when it does work, it doubles or triples the command.
Tech support wants me to switch it with the SD stb in another room to see if it is the connection. Does this seem logical? What else should I do? Your thoughts and ideas are appreciated.
It's probably a remote IR issue, which is fixed by getting a remote IR extender. 5 or 6 bux I think at their online store, or support can sometimes send these for free since it's impacting your normal tv viewing. just depends if the hold time and talking to support is worth the 6 bux that you could spend to buy it. sometimes I'd rather just pay for it instead of waiting on hold. pick your poison.
Remote problems are a well-worn topic on these forums. Do a quick search and you will get many past discussions about all possible causes and even a few remedies. Assuming the remote is not malfunctioning, try it on another STB if you can, or at least on another TV. One of the principle causes of remote misbehavior is IR interference from the TV itself, where TV IR interferes with the transmitted signal. This is often worst at startup because the TV draws a lot of electricity to warmup and IR is heavier; after a few minutes it usually abates somewhat. Some model TV's are more prone to IR discharge, that's why I recommend trying a different TV. Solutions can range from extenders to simple pieces of cardboard shielding. Again, try researching the topic for a solution that might work for you as each situation has to be evaluated separately. Good luck. Thank you.
