Hasn't "destroyed" my LCD, I see absolutely no evidence of this standby mode message causing any problem at all, on any of our TVs, and one of them is generally on 24/7 (well, maybe more like 20/7...).

As far as I can tell only a few people have reported this problem, perhaps it is as simple as it just being a broken STB. I really do not think this is a wide-spread problem, but if you have it, it sure would be serious. And displaying this message most certainly should be a user option IMO.

Hahaha...well, to be honest, I haven't seen it either.  I just turn my tv off and ignore the stb.  I do find the message annoying and unnecessary, mainly because I can't figure out how to get rid of it most of the time without turning on the lights and looking at the remote.  I don't even know why an stb has a standby mode, but maybe I should go back and read the other posts.  I just wish the remote had some useful buttons with backlighting; I would gladly give up the lighting on the big red button for something useful.  Maybe I could find the menu button then (or whatever the one that is supposed to release that mode).  In a better world, pressing most any button might put the box in a useful state.

I leave my STB on all of the time, so I really never see the message anyway because I turn the TV off like you do.

You don't have to hit the Menu button, you can always just hit the STB button and the Power button, that will also turn the STB back on (and those are both lighted!), but may also turn the TV off if you use the remote and have not separated the on/off function). All the message is saying is that the STB is turned off, absolutely nothing else. If your TV is off you never see it, if it is on it is just warning you.

Verizon implemented this because large numbers of users leave their remote set to turn the TV and STB on/off at the same time with one push of a button (probably don't even know that the on/off can be separated on the remote, or that the STB can be turned off on the front panel, they don't ever read the book!) and if the TV failed to receive the command the STB went off and the TV was left on, and then they found it difficult to get the TV off without turning the STB back on, over and over, and they called the FSC incessantly about it. This way at least you know the TV is on.

I really think it is a good feature, but it absolutely should be an option so it can be set off by those that it annoys.

I can easily see how that would happen when trying to control two boxes with one button; one is inevitably going to get out of sync.  I guess I would likely never set things up that way just for that reason...I would just leave the stb on and never give it any thought.

Perhaps people should not leave their TV's on long enough to cause burn in.....  The message did not CAUSE the burn in... the message just happen to be what was on the screen while the TV was left on... left on long enough to cause burn in.... If the TV was turned off while not in use, there would be no burn in issue.

This does not appear to be any different than the myriad of news channels that have a constant crawl at the bottom of their screen. Would people be asking CNN, FOX, ESPN, etc to pay for a new TV if they noticed that they had a burn in on the bottom of their screen. No, they would be told the same thing. Turn the TV off when you aren't watching it.....

I would like to have an option to disable the standby message.  It has ruined my 42" LCD TV.  I have the Verizon logo persisted into the screen of my LCD TV.  Every input on the TV now displays a shadow of the verizon logo in 6 different spots on the display.  I have spoken to multiple tech support folks with no luck getting this feature turned off to prevent further damage to any of my equipment.  To any of the Verizon software developers out there:  PLEASE HELP US DISABLE THIS FEATURE.

In my case, the TV was not turned on.  My TV has an instant on feature that speeds startup time.  When I power off my TV, it goes into standby mode and the pixels are still being rendered even though the backlight is not illuminated.  So, when the box and TV are turned off, the Verizon screensaver is continually being pumped to my TV.  When I turn the set top box off, it should not send a video signal to my TV.

I don't believe the box should even default to an off mode, but then that box seems to be made by people of less than the highest competence.  On the other hand, continually driving pixels in a tv when it is in the off state doesn't seem a great idea either.  Sometimes I think there is a competition running for the worst designs possible.

Hi,

I'm having exactly the same problem. I can describe it as if a watermark with Verizon logo and "press menu to..." is displayed all the time during all TV broadcasts on all the channels. Sometimes it is quite obscure because of the motion picture and when the viewer concentrates on the action, but when a darker image is broadcasted it becomes very much obvious. I have a 42 inch screen and this watermark becomes really annoying at times. I've never had anything like that with Optimum, which I think to switch back to.

All channels as I said above and in all modes (HDTV and regular).

Please advise.

Thanks.

Yuriy.

As I documented in the "IMG 1.7 Experience" thread, there is now an option to turn off the standby message. I have no idea whether it will help with your problem, I have never seen what you describe, but I have turned off the standby message on both my HD and SD boxes and it works, so it might help you. I also have no idea where you are located, but in that same thread I posted what I believe is a reasonably accurate schedule of the 1.7 rollout.
