I'd return my wimpy Motorola HD DVR in a second and replace it with one of these!

As a long time TiVo Series 1 and Series 2DT user I'm looking forward to this box.  It should work fine on FiOS since the current Series 3 and TiVo HD boxes do.  FiOS is actually better suited than many providers as they are not using switched digital video (SDV), which requires an external tuning adapter with the TiVo boxes.

My only complaint with the TiVo Premier is that they didn't include a DOCSIS modem which could allow future replacment of the tuning adapter or perhaps even whatever eventually replaces the essential still born tru2way product.  That could allow OnDemand to work via the TiVo boxes, which would then completley replace the need for a Verizon STB.

I'm going to give it a few months to see how the early adopters fare.  If all looks well I'll give serious consideration to replacing my QIP 7216 (which has given me a few headaches) with a TiVo Premier.

I am happy with my Tivo HD and terabyte drive. Wow the new one is prettier, and what content is 1080p?

Some streaming content is (or will be) in 1080p.  Of course, there is no broadcast content at that level.

I wonder if the old and new will talk without a software update, or if there is one on it's way. Things may get interesting. I wonder what happens if Tivo breaks my box.

TiVo pushes out software updates all the time and those very rarely break anyones box.  I won't say never as TiVo bricked my Series 1 once very early in the days, but they paid to have it shipped back and restored.

When the Series 3 (and TiVo HD) came out it didn't break the Series 1 and Series 2 units.  Also, the Series 2 units were able to transfer records with the Series 3, just not HD content.  I expect we'll see program transfers work between the Series 3 and Premier (actually, a Series 4).  If the Premier ends up supporting live streaming between boxes (to get around the CCI bit problems) I don't expect to see that ported back to the Series 3.

The only problem is that it uses M-cards only.  I've had one heck of a time trying to get one in the Philadelphia area for my TivoHD.  There is no chance that I will be able to get 2 if I want one of these to replace the Motorola DVR.

Just ask for a CableCard.  All CableCards are M-CARDs now, as Motorola and Scientific Atlanta halted production of the old S-CARDS about two years ago.  You create all sorts of problems for yourself when you try to insist on a M-CARD over the phone.

From the TivoHD FAQ:

Does the TivoHD work with Verizon FiOS?

Yes. The TivoHD replaces the FiOS STB and DVR, so you no longer need to pay those fees to Verizon. It supports all the same SD and HD channels as the FiOS DVR, including all subscription sports packages. TiVo supplies its own guide data for all FiOS channels with more accurate and complete program information than Verizon provides for its own boxes.

The TivoHD does not support Verizon's own Video On Demand (VOD), nor does it support Verizon's on-screen widgets for weather and traffic. If you don't want to lose Verizon's VOD, you can rent their Motorola STB and connect that to a separate input on your television. Note the TiVo does not support multi-room viewing with Verizon's Motorola boxes; it only supports multi-room viewing with other TiVos.

The TivoHD requires one CableCard (M-CARD) from Verizon to support both tuners. This card plugs into the front of the box to authorize all of the channels you pay for. Verizon charges $3.99/mo for this CableCard, and requires a "truck roll" to install it. Verizon will not ship CableCards or allow local pickup under any circumstances; to the representative, it may look like they can ship you the cards, but if they submit the order that way, you will receive an automated phone message within 2-3 days with the date and time of the scheduled installation.

There is no charge for FiOS CableCard installation, so long as the only action performed is a CableCard install. Anything said to the contrary is outdated information. If you want to return or remove existing equipment, do not mention that when you order the CableCard. Verizon charges $79 for truck roll orders where the caller references equipment removal. Officially, free equipment return is only available by request of a prepaid mailing label or through a visit to the local office.

Note Verizon's order system and CSRs scripts only list "CableCards." Verizon sales does not have any information on S-CARDs or M-CARDs. As of 2Q 2009, Verizon FiOS uses M-CARDs for all new installs in all markets, without exception. No matter what the sales rep says, that is what you get when you order a CableCard from Verizon.

Ditto on what Ken just said. Most CSRs don't know a M-Card from a S-Card. The tech should call before the visit. Just make sure they have a M-Card on their truck. If they do not, then they should not be running a cable card install. Some techs may have S-cards on their truck from a previous upgrade to a M-Card. S-cards are still around and techs have been holding onto them because many of the older cable card ready TVs do not support multi stream cards.
