Is it more feesable to rent or buy a router for FIOS?  I was contemplating purchasing but wasn't sure if there was one out there that someone recommends over another?

Thanks

You have to have a fios router in order for the set top box to work (feeds updates etc. to it) but you can disable the wireless on it and use your own with it if wanted.  Doesnt matter which one either. When they give you one they dont charge you for it, but you just have to give it back when the service is terminated.

You can buy them on their accesories page, but I don't see why one would do it unless they are upgrading the one they are given for a certain reason.

There are far more better routers on the market then the ones they give out/sell.

Hello,

Depending on the devices (desktops, laptops, game consoles, tablets, printers, smartphones, hand-held devices, etc.) you will be connecting wired or wirelessly to the home network and how you'd like them connected/configured, then it'd be up to you whether a single router would suffice, or if you need a second router and/or a switch.

The FiOS router is wireless and is normally free of charge to those with FiOS internet service.

There have been different types of routers supplied by Verizon based on the date of installation.

Here is a link with a list of FiOS routers and their respective user guides:

http://www22.verizon.com/Support/Residential/Internet/fiosinternet/networking/user+guides/user+guide...

The latest FiOS router available in circulation is the FiOS Gigabit 'N' router.  This router is normally free of charge when upgrading to the 150 Mbps/65 Mbps or 300/65 Mbps internet speed.  If you don't already have this router and you have a higher speed of 50/25 Mbps or 75/35 Mbps and have multiple devices connected wirelessly, then you can purchase the FiOS gigabit 'N' router:

a) online via www.verizon.com/fiosaccessories

OR

b) thru Verizon's Customer Service department at 1-800-Verizon (1-800-837-4966),

OR

c) at a local FiOS TV store (call first to check if they have them in stock).  For a list of stores:  http://www22.verizon.com/support/residential/tv/fiostv/general+support/account+issues/questionsone/8...

If you opt to use your own router as a primary router on the home network, then ensure that you are familiar and very comfortable with the set-up, and be aware that if you call Verizon's Technical Support for any questions/issues then they may not be able to assist you because that is not the recommended network configuration.

Also, if you have FiOS TV, then there'd be some impacts on your TV service.

It might be better to have your own router as a secondary router (as a switch, for example).

Here is one forum thread regarding this topic:

Lastly, perhaps if you provide a bit more detail about your network set-up/plans then some of the more technical-savvy users can share their insights about home networking and recommended equipment.
