Closed Captioning will not show up on DVD rental--HELP!!

here's my dilemma:

yesterday we watched a DVD rental that supposedly had closed captioning option. we clicked on "subtitles for the Hearing Impaired" option and hit Play, but no CC showed up. Then we hit the CC button on our HD STB and it still didn't appear. Then we took the DVD upstairs to another TV with a Standard STB but whose TV remote has a CC button that works like a charm; again clicked on CC option on the DVD but nothing appeared; hit the TV remote CC button and nothing still. Could "something" be blocking CC from appearing or have you ever heard of a DVD that should display CC not displaying it?

I know this is confusing, but I was very puzzled last night. This is the second DVD rental that we couldn't get CC to display and I'm ready to quit renting any again. Any help appreciated!!!

1st this has nothing to do with your Verizon FIOS Service.  The STBs have no impact on how a DVD will play on your your TV screen and what DVD options may or may not be available to you.

The Universal Remote provided by FIOS may not activate the cc option of your TV.  You saw this when you had the hit the cc button from the TVs remote on the 2nd TV that you tried.

If you provide details on the TV, DVR, and how they are connected perhaps someone here would be able to shed some light on my your DVD Player is not working properly with your TV.

We've been using the CC button on the universal remote with the HD STB for TV shows and movies with no problem--just seems so weird that TWO DVDs would not display CC.

the TV is a Samsung LN37B530; the DVD player is a Panasonic DVD-S1; the HD STB is a 7216.1

I just looked at the back of the DVD player--forgive my terminology here--I have a 3-way split wire with red, yellow, white ends plugged into the DVD player and the other single end connected to the TV,and a power cord from the DVD player to the wall outlet.  Hmmm....I'm guessing something is wrong becausethe DVD player is not in any way hooked up to the HD STB, correct?  How should it be connected?  THANKS!

The Closed Captioning for TV Shows would be coming from the Verizon STB.

The Closed Captioning from the DVD  would be generated by either the DVD and/or the TV.
