Horrible service

I lost all service - phone, internet, and tv - yesterday.  I have been told that no one can come to restore service until tomorrow.  this is totally unacceptable, particularly since my home security system runs through my phone line.  I now have no security system in my home, and was up all night, too scared to sleep.  To make matters worse, I was lied to by two different representatives, both of whom promised me that someone would call be back last night to try and arrange for earlier service.  I am still waiting for those calls.  I will switch my service to another provider as soon as I can make arrangements.  I can't take any more sleepless nights.

I grew up in a big city and a not-so-nice neighborhood.  However even taking all that into account, it sounds like you live in a really tough neighborhood.

First thing I'd try is moving

Armond, how would you know that?  Anyone can have a home security system whether they live in a good or bad neighborhood.  Some people might just feel safer with that if they live alone.

Feeling safer with a security system is one thing, but being "up all night, too scared to sleep" without a security system implies that you have something to be very afraid of.

Since we don't have any details, the assumption that the OP lives in a very bad neighborhood seems (to me) a reasonable one.

Fair question.  But even assuming that my remark was not tongue-in-cheek (which of course it was), I must say that I too have a rather elaborate security system.  There are times when I do not set it, but during those times  I am not living in fear.  Hence my perhaps indelicate response.

Speaking more seriously, I would personally never trust an alarm system that itself relies on anything other than an old-fashioned POTS line to communicate with outside agencies.  There are many ways to arrange the communications end of an alarm system (including mobile phone rigs), but using VoIP with its attendant weaknesses is way down the list.  I am frankly a little surprised that VZ even pushes such a product.

somegirl, It's usually not good to assume when you don't know the details.  It's equally possible that if you have a security system that you have gotten so used to that has given you peace of mind because it makes you feel safer and then all of a sudden you're without it, you're just scared.  Burglaries and break-ins have happened in better neighborhoods too so you really don't know.  Like I said, if you're living all alone in a house, it's understandable to be afraid whether it's in a good or a bad neighborhood.

I wouldn't assume based on that one statement of being up all night.

Since my earlier post in this thread (above) was written, I have learned that VZ Digital Voice service is not really a VoIP-based system, but instead functions as "POTS over optical cable."  This is important for security applications, as it permits standard alarm systems that use Contact ID to communicate with central stations in a reliable manner.  In fact, I recently discontinued my old VZ POTS service (copper line) and transferred my alarm to a second VZ Digital Voice line.  A much more streamlined setup, and also much more economical.
