How do you create a home page named index.htm

Message 1 of 7

I created a basic test website using Site Builder.  It said that the url for the website was http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer####/ instead of http://mysite.verizon.net/myusername/ , which is what the Help led me to expect.  When I try to go to http://mysite.verizon.net/myusername/, it tells me that "This home page is under construction! ".

The help site tells me that I should "name their home page index.htm ".  How do I go about doing this.  I don't mind getting rid of the current webpage I created, as it is only a test one (how do I do this?)

If you can either answer these 2 questions re the name of my webpage, and, more importantly, how to name my home page index.htm, or direct me to where the answers may be found, I'd appreciate it.

By the way, even though I signed on as "bearsfolks", the site insists on calling me "turner111", which is another user id I had created as I was having trouble signing on under "bearsfolks"!

TIA

Addendum to previous reply:

OK.  This is weird--but I should be used to that, and just grateful that it seems to work (for now).

What I had done is FTPd some image files to my site using Filezilla, but when I had tried to access them, I was unsuccessful.  I am almost sure that I used the same url (and variations of it) as you suggested, namely,  http://mysite.verizon.net/username/filename , and it either did not work, or gave me the "Page under construction", or, in some cases asked me for my username and password.

But, when I did it this time, it worked.  So I probably had something off, but I can now do what I want.

By the way, if you'll permit another question, while on the site-builder site, it said that there was a "Web Photo Manager", and said that "To download the Web Photo Manager: Open the Site Builder application and go to the All My Sites page. Click on the Web Photo Manager link (listed under Advanced Building Tools )."  I can't find it--would you happen to know where it is?

In any case, thanks a lot for all your help--it solved my problem.

I'm able to get to http://mysite.verizon.net/bearsfolks/ just fine. It has some very distorted graphics that say "city hall" and "Pano Rama Tour" among other things. Does this sound like the right page?

Maybe check for typos? Your page should always be available at both:

 mysite.verizon.net/vzexxxxxx

- and -

mysite.verizon.net/username

Thanks, somegirl, for your quick response.

You're right--I can get to the  http://mysite.verizon.net/bearsfolks/ page--that is the right one that I had created as a quick test.

My bigger issue is with regard to index.htm .

What I want to do is to upload a bunch of image files to my site, and then access them online.  To determine how to do this, I went to the Verizon FTP Server Information page:

https://www.verizon.net/central/vzc.portal?_nfpb=true&action=FTP Server Information&_pageLabel=pws_content#wlp_pws_content

Acccording to this, "Subscribers should make sure to name their home page index.htm ", and "Internet address of your home page will be: http://mysite.verizon.net/username/index.htm ".  It's when I try to get to http://mysite.verizon.net/bearsfolks/index.htm that I get the "This home page is under construction!" message.

It's quite possible that I'm doing this wrong.  What I want to do is to upload a bunch of image files from my harddrive to my site using something like FileZilla to FTP them, and then be able to access them using their URLs.  I can upload them just fine.  Any help in how to access them using their URLs would be appreciated.

TIA

Ah, I do believe you are making it more complicated than you need to.

Here are steps to accomplish this, assuming you are using Windows:

1. Open Windows Explorer (My Computer should work fine) and type "ftp://mysite.verizon.net" in the address bar.

2. It should pop up a box asking for a username and password - put in your Verizon username and password.

3. Open another My Computer window and navigate to the folder where the files are that you want to upload.

4. Copy/paste or Cut/paste or click and drag the files that you want from your computer to the FTP window.

5. Wait a few minutes for Verizon's servers to update, then access your files at http://mysite.verizon.net/username/filename

If you want them organized better, you can create folders in the FTP window just like any Windows folder, just be sure to change your URL accordingly.

Ex. If you created a folder called "pictures" in the FTP site and uploaded the file "image.gif" to it, then the URL to access it would be http://mysite.verizon.net/username/pictures/image.gif

Hopefully this makes sense. If it doesn't then I can try to put together some screenshots for you, just let me know!

Hi somegirl:

You're fast!

OK.  I did what you suggested, and was able to do steps 1, 2 and 3, which got me to "FTP root at mysite.verizon.net", and showed what was there.  However, when I tried to do step 4, dragging a file over to the FTP window seemed to create a shortcut to the file, and when I released the mouse button, the page changed to display that gif file (I was able to get back to the FTP window by hitting the back arrow on the top left).  When I tried to copy and paste, I can copy, but it won't allow me to paste (there is no Paste in the right mouse menu, and Ctrl-V did not work either).

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your time.

I looked, and didn't see it either. There are no advanced tools for Site Builder, at least that I could find.

The Photo Manager in your link was for working with photos before uploading them. Once they're ready, there is a photo upload tool called Photo Gallery.

It appears the Verizon web system is as byzantine as the billing system. Lots of parts that don't mesh well. They are working on making it look seamless, but it's really just a wish.
