Verizon is chargin me for a router that I returned

I recently upgraded my router. When the Verizon representative gave me my new router, I gave him my old router, assuming that he would return it to Verizon. Verizon emailed me the other day saying that the router was never returned and they will charge me $100 for it--but I did return it! This is tantamount to stealing $100 from me. I tried to call to complain, I was told they would take care of it--but I see it is still on my account as not having returned it.  I have no use for this router, I was happy to see the Verizon rep take it--but he obviously neglected to take care of this.

I am a long time Verizon customer, and as you might imagine, I am disappointed by my treatment from Verizon on this matter. I tried to call, but keep on being sent in circles. How might this be rectified?
